Girls just want to have fun but what's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing?

I had a very busy week and now I have even busier weekend, so I only have time for a quick post today.

My 9yo is performing in the school musical today. The theme is the popular hits from 1950s to 2000s with each grade doing couple of songs from their decade. Kindergardeners are doing 50's, first graders are doing 60's, and since my daughter is in third grade, they are doing the 80s.

Here are their songs (you may have guessed two of them by now):

"What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing" by Billy Joel (boys and girls)
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper (girls)
"Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi's " (boys).

I really like the theme of the musical and there are a lot of good songs, so I think it is going to be fun!

In addition to doing the songs, the kids are wearing fashions from their decades.  We had a lot of fun going to the vintage clothes store and picking up the authentic outfit from the 80s. It was fun for me, because I was in High School in the 80's and could have actually worn identical outfit myself.

80's Girl!
We got the whole outfit including leather boots (how awesome are those?), studded belt and necklace for $20. We will also do big hair and blue eye make up to complete the look!

I always thought 80's were awful fashion wise (and music wise), but through this project I could now see some funk in it. My daughter and her friends think 80's are cool. I may even dare to look at some of my pictures now. I did it all, complete with big, colorful, drop shoulder cutoff sweatshirt, plastic clip on earrings and all. My favorite colors were hot pink and turquoise.I was lucky to be in HS in the 80's, also because I had naturally huge hair!

What did you wear in High School?

Did you like the 80's hits?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. Oh my shoulders were a mile wide, my earrings were down to my clavicle and my skirts barely touched my thighs - horrific! My hair was. A virtual planetoid.

    1. Tabitha. PLANETOID. You MUST be a writer; I have never had to look up so many words as when reading your writing!! But Wikipedia just confused me: "astronomical object in direct orbit around the Sun" so I think "Oh, like a dwarf planet!" but then read "Not to be confused with dwarf planet." Which sends me to definitions of dwarf planet, as well as Pluto, and now am left wondering why Pluto is a dwarf planet and not a planetoid! Thank you for making me think!

    2. Audrey, I'm not that much of an intellectual, it's part of a line from I Married An Axe Murderer"!

  2. AJC, I was also in high school in the 80s, and it was not one of the retro looks I hope will ever be revived! Here's me: asymmetrical permed hair, torn/ripped tees and sweatshirts, and very very short skirts, sometimes with heels. Yeesh. And let's not forget the Hawaiian Tropic coconut oil. Bad bad bad, all bad.

80s music, on the other hand, is a completely different story!

    I LOVE the 80s!
Hawaiian tropic coconut oil--forgot about that memory. Good one, audreys! How about Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers! (70s/80s?) I also had asymmetrical permed hair! Like, we were so totally cool back then!

  5. I hope your daughter had fun today, mine was performing all week, in a musical, 2 performances a day, missed school for it, finally done tomorrow. She's a bit of a ham like her father. ;)
I used to really think the 80's were terrible but now I think we were kind of cool.
And speaking of, just bought our tickets to see The Boss this summer!!

    1. Dani, we just saw him a couple of weeks ago in DC!!!! Such an amazing performer, he is. They had a bit of a tribute to Clarence; his absence was definitely noticeable. Although his nephew is just adorable. The only problem for me was that we saw him on a school night (Sunday) so I spent the last hour or so worrying about whether my kids were in bed. Summer, how perfect!

  6. Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun! I was in elementary school in the 80s and my parents refused to let me wear any of the 'cool' stuff (like the dangly earrings and rubber bracelets), but I remember all those songs, and dancing with my friends - Madonna and Cyndi Lauper were our icons! I

  7. I am very fond of the 80s, I was a teen too but strangely I am blacking out on the fashion I was wearing (although I remember the padded shoulders). The music stuck with me though, the world wouldn't be the same without the 80s soundtrack.

  8. Ema, me too! The music is what's memorable for me. I was a teen in the 80s, but I can't for the life of me remember what I wore.
