Stripes and Dots still going strong - J.Crew Fitting Room Reviews

I stopped at J.Crew over the weekend to return the Sabrina dress and colorblock cardigans I reviewed HERE. Since I was already there, I wanted to take few items to the fitting room for reviews.

The 30% final sale was still going on and they were some great deals there. I did buy couple of items that I will show you in another post.  I was uninspired by new items that day and nothing looked super exciting to me, but I did find a few items that I don't see online, so they are either coming in the next rollout or are in store only.

Awning Stripe Popover

Size Medium
This one is not online and I think it is part of the May rollout.  I first saw it styled with No2 Skirt in Porcelain Paisley and some of you expressed interest in it,  so I thought I will review it.

More May preview pictures HERE

Btw, I have pre-ordered the skirt and it should be shipping this week. I am awaiting it anxiously and I will review it promptly, as soon as I get it. Maybe I will be tempted to check out the popover again with the skirt.

TTS, like other popovers
The shirt is made of gauzy textured cotton. It should be light and breezy for the summer but it does feel a little scratchy.  Overall nice, regular popover fit, but nothing special imo.

$69.50, 100% cotton

Unidentified Striped Boatneck

Size Medium
This tee also comes in navy and gray but I was looking for the red stripes and on the hanger it looked like it had a potential.  However, the fit was strange. I took size Medium, which is bigger of my two knit sizes, but it was still tight across the shoulders and chest, even if it may not look like that in the pictures. The waist area on the other hand, was big, sloppy and not draping correctly. Maybe I needed to try a Large?  It was a major pass for me, not even on huge sale.

Runs small across shoulders and chest.

$45, 100% cotton

Unidentified Big Dot Dress

Size 6
I saw this dress in store few weeks ago but I was never compelled enough to try it. I think this one may be store only.

It looked big on a hanger so I took a size 6 with me to try.

Runs big
It was a right call, as the dress was still loose in size 6, but I suppose this is how it should fit. I think the idea is that if you thought the big shot dress was too hard to dress down or too puffy this dress is much easier to wear casually.  Of course, it is not really casual, since it requires dry cleaning.

Easy (aka sloppy) fit
I did not like the pockets sticking out and over all sloppiness. I would still be much more likely to wear this over the Big Shot dress and this one did not make me feel like a five year old.

$168, 100% silk, lining 100% poly
However, it is still just as pricey, and it seems even more so since it has a casual dress vibe.

That's all folks!

Are you tempted by any of these?
What did you spend your rewards cards on (if you got one)?
Do you think this rendition of big dots dress would be easier to wear?

I will have more reviews tomorrow, including Lucille dress in silk and Margate purse

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. I am lusting over that pencil skirt, I would love to try the dress so can't wait to hear your thoughts. I rarely wear patterns but that one is stunning.

    1. I have high hopes for this skirt, the print is unusual and classic at the same time.

  2. Oh and why are they so slow with the catalogue these days? Or style guide as it has been fashioned?
Annoyingly they are only available to view on the US site too, which is really odd, I have to keep flipping back and forth.

    1. This must be annoying Tabitha, I wonder if it is because they only have US version and they don't want to show it with US prices because they raised them arbitrarily.

  3. i love the skirt as well and have it pre-ordered! AJC - have you seen the pom pom capris "in real life" - I am SERIOUSLY lusting after them. IN Canada the price point is prohibitive, but I have a $ figure in my head that if they ever get down to, they will be mine!

    1. WMM, I pre-ordered the skirt too!!! Great minds definitely think alike!

    2. I don't think I've seen the pom pom capris in store, but they were not on my radar so I might be wrong. I will double check next time and be sure to try them if they have them.

    1. I think once we all get it we should all have a virtual Porcelain Paisley blogo-party!

  5. Nothing I love in this bunch. The skirt is beautiful but I don't want it (just not enough need for more skirts). Although, I wish they'd done this print in a sleeveless (not strapless) dress. The fit of the red striped top reminds me of the fit on the linen cable sweater I tried in the store. It did something strange around the hip area that I didn't like. I don't think you could size up in this, it would be too big on top. I suppose it is meant to be fitted at the waist/hips? The dot dress looks cute on you and I also like it better than the big shot dot dress. Like the perfect shirt but not wow'd and don't need any more basic perfect shirts. All in all I'm not lusting over anything lately. I just want the weather to warm up so I can wear the spring/summer stuff I have. Thanks so much for posting the reviews, I always enjoy seeing what's coming!

    1. cate, I don;t know what it is with J.Crew always doing the strapless only in the prettiest prints, cost cutting? Many of us cannot do strapless....
I had the bunching up in the waist happening to me in quite a few J.Crew tops, I don't know how is this flattering on anybody, some can get away with it but it still isn't the best choice.

  6. That pencil skirt is beautiful, ajc if yours is shipping out this week does that mean it will be online on Thursday? I've never pre-ordered anything, I don't know how it works!
Well guess what the Alturuzza (sp?) striped dress was a DISASTER on me. It straightened my figure by puffing out at my biggest point (my bottom) while looking boyish through the top due to my lack of bust. Going straight back along with the other striped dress I ordered. I think I'm done with stripes.

    1. Hi Dani, the whole pre-order business is worthless, yes, i just means it will ship when item is available on the website, so you are not really gaining anything but the shipping is free and you are first in line in case the item was to sell out.
Sorry the Altuzarra dress did not work out for you, I was worrying it will not, when you said you ordered the same size as me, no way we can wear the same size. Maybe you should have gone with xs but I can see how it can look boyish when you don't have curves up top and it would probably be shorter as well. Did you also order the Kari dress? How was it?

    2. The Kari dress was also a disaster. It has a giant smocked elastic waist band that is not flattering and the rayon fabric had a yucky handfeel in my opinion.
I also bought the painted ropes skirt and I'm sending that back too. I realized it's too close in attitude to my Gallerista skirt which I almost never wear as it is! Also it's lined in a thin polyester that I am not a fan of. Off i go to the post office!

  7. I preordered the skirt after seeing it here first, AJC. I fear it won't work for me though since my personal shopper says it's the same length as all the other number 2 pencil skirts, around 21". I sure hope it's longer as it appears on the mannequin. Crossing my fingers.

    Thanks for the reviews!

    1. I was also told it is 21"-22" long. I seriously thought that the skirt in store was longer and I even asked my PS to measure it but they took it off the floor already. I think they sometimes make those sample items different from retail version, I think it will be the same case with the Java dress, that look longer than Aplle dress but it will probably end up being the same. Very annoying. I even pointed out on shopwithm rope skirt review that IRL is has different number of stripes than on the website, I seriously think this is misleading the customer.

  9. Count me in as excited for the No.2 Pencil in Porcelain Paisley. It's quite unique IMO, one of those pieces that you could wear years from now and someone would ask, "Where did you get that skirt?"

    1. Hi xoxo,
I just hope that with this many expectation the skirt does not disappoint irl. For example, I really hope they matched the pattern, as it will look really bad with such large scale print if they didn't, and for $158 they really should.

  10. I just placed a pre-sell order for the porcelain paisley skirt too. I loved it the minute I saw it here. My sales rep couldn't find the skirt, but when I explained it was in the Concept store she called there and got the information to place my order!! She really didn't know when it would be shipped, but confirmed it was $158.00.

    1. I was recently told by my PS that the skirt will ship May 7th. Initially I thought it was May 2nd, so we will have to wait another week.

    2. My online PS just told me that the skirt won't be available until the next rollout on May 17. She said that the date has been pushed back.
