Fashion Night Out and Double-cloth slim trench

Double-cloth slim trench

Yesterday was Fashion Night Out and in honor of it, I got together with KnitYarns of the wonderful blog, On Trend Orchids. We met at the Garden State Plaza mall. I tell you, it is always a delight to meet with a fellow JCAs!

On my way to J.Crew, I noticed that some stores (like Ann Taylor) were running 30% off everything that night, but  J.Crew did not offer any promotion to celebrate. Full price cashmere was 20% off, but that is not such a great deal imo.  Since the J.Crew cashmere is overpriced to start with, I don't think 20% off even brings it down to the fair price. The store was rather empty and I did not see anything new.

We didn't found anything to buy, but we chatted up a storm and had some tea together at the nearby Nordstrom cafe. The only thing that caught our attention at J.Crew was a Double-cloth slim trench and I decided to quickly try it on. To my surprise I really liked it.

I never thought I'd wanted a pink coat, but this color is very flattering and makes your skin glow. It would look great with black, brown, camel and blue and would be very striking with burgundy.

It is a shorter trench and probably looks best with pants. I think the length (and overall silhouette) is similar to Icon trench coat, so if you like it, you'd like the length of this one. I am glad that it is not double breasted, makes it easier to wear it open, especially that it is not a terribly warm coat. For some reason, I didn't dig the double cloth fabric last year, but it felt nice in this coat. I am not saying that it has changed, it may have been just the color (or being in a good mood), but it also seemed more substantial. It has a nice lining and piping inside, I liked the sleeves, the pockets and the buttons. The belt is too short to tie, you have to belt it and I wish it was longer.

I would say it runs TTS in J.Crew coat sizes. I tried on size 6, which is smaller of my coat sizes.  I was comfortable, but I only had a perfect fit t-shirt on. If I was in a more-buying-than-trying mode, I would like to compare it to an 8.

Size 6

The color makes this coat! If you are afraid of pink, or you think it washes you out (this is often my problem), you needn't fear, it is a rosy pink, saturated enough not to wash you out and not too pastel-ish or too sweet, but still reading light, delicious pink. Definitely, color well done.

I remember that I also saw a not-yet-online pink scarf with burgundy flowers. It was very pretty and I think would be perfect with this coat.

KnitYarns took this picture, she definitely made me smile!

I am not in need of a coat (repeat: DO NOT NEED ANY MORE COATS!), but if I ever see it on significant sale, it may be hard to resist.

Have a great weekend everybody! I am dropping off my daughter for girls scouts camping trip tonight, so hubs and I have a house to ourselves!  When we were teenagers we had a saying that translated to something like 'Old folks are gone, house is ours, turn the party music on!'  I guess we have gone full circle with this...  We will be meeting up with some friends tonight and I am thinking dinner AND a movie tomorrow, it should be fun! We'll see about the party ;)

That's all folks!

Do you like the Double-cloth slim trench? Pink coats in general?
What are your weekend plans?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. I so appreciate you doing this review today. I went ahead and used the 25% off cardholder discount to purchase this and I was a little worried that I bought the wrong size. But you have put my mind at ease. :)

I cannot wait to get it, and though I normally hate cold weather, I am actually excited for it so I can wear this beauty out of the house.

(Last winter was so warm I haven't really felt cool weather in a long time. I have a feeling we are due for another warm winter, but there has to be at least a few cold days in our future, right?)

  3. It's a great coat, I also don't need any more winter coats but oh the deep pink but yet not quite pink boucle J Crew coat appeared on Net a Porter today - £530 - that's about $700!

  4. I love this coat, I bought it with the 25% off cardholders promo. When I saw it in the plastic, I thought it was definitely a return because of the color. When I took it out and put it on, it was instant love. I agree with your review. That darn belt is just too short. I managed to tie it, but barely. It's the only flaw in an otherwise great coat. I'm keeping it!

  5. Well, that coat is radiant on you! I think you should swap out the belt for an oversized brown belt to make it pop a little bit more. :)

    1. That's a good idea! But I would be sure to loose the belt sooner or later...

  6. The coat looks great on you. Thanks for sharing the review with us. It was the one coat this season that caught my eye but I don't need a new coat this year. A few years ago there was a gorgeous salmon colored swing coat in a very similar shade of pink at the clearance center that I regret not purchasing.

    1. It was awesome, although what AJC kindly did not add is that I was delirious from lack of sleep due to a work deadline! ( And that she was wearing an exceptionally polished J Crew outfit, which peeks out of from under the coat in the pictures.)

  8. Yes, I definitely think you need that coat. It was gorgeous on you! Actually, I think I might need that coat, as well :). It was so nice to get together for Fashion's night out! I agree, J Crew really did underwhelm as far as any promos or festivities. Enjoy your weekend!

  9. Thank you for this review. I'm considering the blue version of this coat and it's really helpful to read your comments on the sizing. I have a Lady Day from 4-5 years ago and I can't wear anything substantial in it so I'll try this one in a size larger. The pink is pretty but I have a rosy pink peacoat from J.Crew that I seldom wear. It's very similar to this color, which is a bit too much on the coral side for my skin tone. Looks great on you though, I admire your resolve to walk away. I wonder if it would be possible to double the belt in the back and wear it that way, rather than buckling it.

    1. I didn't have much luck with this, it wasn't laying right. The belt isn't very pliable and it somewhat keeps its shape, so when you double it, it kind of forms an oval ring. I didn't spend much time on it, though. Maybe I can make it work.

    2. I agree with cate, I think you really have to belt this one or just remove the belt when you wear it open.

    1. I think it is. My shoulders are kind of broad. I wear a size 10 in Perfect Shirts (M in Boy Shirts and most other J. Crew tops) and I bought a 10 in this coat.

  12. Well I agree with everybody it's perfect. Hopefully it will go on a deep discount and make it's way into AJC's closet. Have you ever seen the Collection Silk Foulard jacket? It's something different and I would like your opinion. Thanks for the reviews .

  14. I love this coat, it was the coat that caught my eye but I really needed to buy the heather acorn Icon, I do love this shade of pink however.
It looks so pretty on you!

I think the salmon coat that you have is just as beautiful! The heather camel is definitely more practical and timeless.

  15. I love the COAT. Style does not depend on price. It has to be original and express your personality.
    Thanks for the review.
