Little Red Riding Boots

After almost two months of not shopping and no clothing purchases,  I finally bought something and it wasn't cheap. I blame it on Ema. After she posted pictures and review of Stuart Weitzman's Toujours I placed an order with Amazon to 'try them on'.

Like Ema, I love the look of pull on boots but usually cannot get them on. This was the case for example of Booker Midheel Boots (see my review HERE) and many other pairs I tried while browsing in department stores. High heeled boots were on my fall/winter shopping list, but I had doubts about the color since I already own two pairs of brown boots and what I really wanted was black. To my chagrin, black was unavailable anywhere in my price range.

Amazon has free 2 day shipping and free returns on shoes, so I thought there is no risk to try, but I was ordering without much hope that they will actually work. Most of the reviews said that they run large but I went with my regular 8.5.

Two days later the shoes arrived and magically, I was able to pull them on without a problem. They do have that squishy padding in the back of the ankle that does the trick. At first I thought I did not remove all the stuffing they put in boots for shipping. I don't know how to explain it, but possibly somebody with knowledge of boots construction  (maybe xoxo will come to the rescue, if she is reading?) can elaborate on how it works. Whatever it is, I was thrilled!

The color is beautiful! It was more red than I expected, but in my case it was a plus since I did not have anything like that in my closet. 8.5 turned out to be just fine, maybe I could go with an 8, but I like to have some extra room in my boots for warmth and ability to wear socks. I did not feel like my heels were slipping, even if there is some extra room in the toe area. Is this magic again?

The leather and the details are beautiful, soft, supple and luxurious. No hardware gives them classic, elegant streamlined look. The heel is stable but not too chunky. They seem very comfortable. Even with sale they are not cheap, but the price seams very reasonable for the quality.

As for the versatility of the color, I would not say they go with everything, but they go with many items in my closet and elevate every look. They look good with skirts and dresses but I am also able to tuck in a pair of skinny pants. Now, tucking pants in pull on boots may be tricky, but if you have a problem with pants riding up and bunching up here is my tip: just wear a pair of knee highs over your pants, that makes your leg go in smoothly and keeps the pants secure.

Some reviews were saying that the shaft circumference is narrow but, having average calves, I did not have that problem at all. Maybe it is more prominent with smaller sizes?  I would say the shaft is also higher than average and I find them as high as I can go without going over the knee. That may be a problem if you are shorter but wear a bigger shoe size. My legs are relatively long for my height but I am a 'short shinner'.

My only con  (beside my usual reluctance to part with a good chunk of my money), is that I am afraid I will still be looking for a pair of black boots next season.

Maybe I can consider them an early Valentines Day present to myself. That would justify the red, wouldn't it?
Check them out on Ema HERE.

That's all folks!

What do you think? Should I keep them? Worth the money?

Anybody owns them and want to comment on how they held up?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

    1. Thanks! I actually got them with 20% off at $199. But then I would never got them at full price, way to expensive for my budget.

  3. Happy Valentine's Day ... don't you even think about returning those. First I thought Emma had knocked it out of the park and now you. Stunning !

    1. You are right Dani, I did not mention it, but I am worrying a bit about the wrapped heel.

  5. I too love those boots. I think the color is so stunning. YOu wear many warmer tones, and I am sure they will match so many things- and go nicely with your lovely new bag. BTW if you roll up the bottom of your pants they will stay nice and smooth under your boots.I LOVE the 1st outfit with the dress(Jules?) and cardigan. That is a smashing outfit, and far more sophisticated with those boots.Owning those will not negate a need for black boots. And, there is always next year!

    1. The dress is not Jules, although I think xoxo pointed out that golden paisley Jules is the same print in different colorway.

  6. Love them, love how they are a different colour and really plain which will mean you will not tire of them as I've done of ones with studs, too many straps etc. They are also really flattering to the leg as they are a bit fuller at the top. Also the heel is perf! Good score. Stuart Weizman gets it right every time.

    1. I do like SW shoes, they fit me very well in general. Wish there were less $$$ but I always hunt them on sales.

  7. I think if the color works for you, you should definitely definitely keep them. I also looked these up after Ema's review, but because I don't wear brown (I will wear camel, tan, saddle, but not brown), I also looked for black and came up empty. But these are one of the very few shoes I have ever looked into that uniformly get great reviews.

I ended up ordering three black boots from Nordstrom which have arrived but are still sitting in their gigantic boxes:

    DVF Yvonne:

    Cole Haan Poppy:

    7 for all Mankind Serita:

My thinking is that if I can find a great black boot now, prices are going to be much better than if I wait until next fall...

    1. So, I tried on the first two:

The DVF Yvonne boot is being returned only because it has a covered heel and I much preferred stacked heels b/c I tend to scratch my heels and a scratched covered heel completely ruins the shoe.

The Cole Haan Poppy is remarkably comfortable for a 3.5" heel (.5" is platform). It is more of a pointed toe, so I ordered both an 8 and an 8.5 -- the 8 length is exactly perfect but because I have a wide forefoot (dang bunions), the 8.5 is better for me. Remarkable padding, esp. noticeable when I compare with my old, everyday black BR boots (which will be promptly discarded).

The 7 for all Mankind is to be delivered early next week...

    2. Thanks for reviews audreys! These boots have wrapped hells too, which I did not mentioned and I am worrying about it too as I am not very careful with my shoes and I am likely to scratch them.
I have a small bunion too on my rigth foot and I think that's why I tend to wear 8.5 not 8 in many brands that run narrow (like J.Crew).

  8. Since you are only hesitating on the color I think you should know that the came in black too (not all the retailers got the black though). Maybe you can still find a pair? Although I really think that what's really distinctive in these boots is the color, I am not sure I would love them as much in black. I thought you would like to know. I think they look a bit big but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and amazing in them!

    1. I was looking for black ones but i could not find them at good price. 6 pm had them but at $465, which is more than I would pay.

    2. I don't know if you shop at 6pm.com regularly but they prices go up and down like stock trades. If they still have your size I would keep watching them.

  9. Oh my gosh, those boots are beautiful! I would vote for you to keep them. They look so amazing on you!

  10. Love the boots and they look great with the dress you are wearing in the first few pics. Is that a Jules? It looks like the Jules I loved but thought would be too short....

I lurk on your blog frequently but haven't posted... Just want to let you know how much I appreciate what you do. You and I are very similar sizes, so your feedback is really helpful!

    1. Kristi, I am so glad you delurked, I hope we will see you more. the more the merrier!
This is Terra Paisley dress from few seasons ago, same print as Jules but different colors. I wish they would make Jules this length. This one was also heavier silk twill, lined in acetate and with 2 inch hem.

  11. Ah! After two great reviews from you and Ema, I decided to try them too. Thanks for the Amazon suggestion! I wouldn't have thought to purchase from them, and if you subscribe to their shoe emails, they give you a 20% off, one time use code. Also, thanks in general for all your helpful reviews :)

    1. Thanks, I had them apply the 20% coupon. How did they work out for you Hwin?

    2. Oh glad you were able to use the coupon! I am still debating, as they are about an inch too long and hit my knee, and I wonder if all the city walking I do would wear down the sole faster than I would want for the price. I normally don't spend a lot on clothes/shoes, so I would want these to last. That said, they are SO comfy for the height and look fantastic.

  14. Those look so nice, very flattering! I think the color is fantastic. I like a close fit around the ankle but that is hard to get in a pull-on style. I was looking for a black pair with a moderate heel this year too. I went with a zip-up pair with lower heel from Boden this year (their Classic boots). They work on me because I have muscular calves and skinny ankles. They look more fitted on me than the pull-on boots I've tried.

    1. You are right cate, close fit at ankle is preferred but impossible on me with pull on boots. I was shocked I could actually get them on.

  15. Nice boots, the color is right on trend too. They are very sleek and flattering. The chunky heel has a bit of a 70's vibe that should go well with the boho items in your wardrobe. It sounds like the heel cup has a padded lining and maybe the toebox as well. The Aquatalia boots have a similar feature and it does help to hold the heel snug without being tight.

If you love them, I say keep them. The quality is much better than anything J.Crew churns out and you've always wanted a pair of pull-on boots.
