J.Crew April Rollout Preview - Dresses and more

With every roll out,  J.Crew comes up with few prints that are repeated in different pieces. This spring for example, we have already seen different variation of the apple print and the foulard print.

The print on the pencil skirts that I reviewed yesterday is also used in different items. The paisley print you will come in perfect fit button down and there is a scarf as well. The flower print comes in strapless dress and a scarf. There may be more pieces, this is just what I saw.

Another print this spring, in tradition of 'all things nautical', is the anchor print. To me, this is similar to apple print in terms of wearability, some will love it and some will think it is too literal, especially in navy and white.

Recently, J.Crew also seem to be doing the same shapes over and over and here we have another version of maritime dress, this time in anchor print:

Short and (too) sweet

size Small, TTS
Actually, it is a very cute dress, but maybe just too cute. Where would I wear it? On beach vacation in Martha's Vineyard (we do go there almost every year)? No, it seems like too much, no mentioning that it is usually too hot to wear long sleeve sweatshirt dress.

It will not work for me, but I know many of you like this shape.

$98 100% cotton

Eyelet dress ( also comes in white)

This one is purple. On my phone and on my monitor at home it looked totally blue, but it is purple irl. I don't usually wear purple so I would prefer white, but if you like purple, this is a very pretty shade.

Anyway, it is a very nice dress, finally not high waist-ed, with good length and bra friendly. It has a back zipper and pockets and is fully lined in cotton. In theory sounds great, but it is just not very exciting to me, for some reason. Maybe I was just tired?

Good length and waist in a proper place

Pockets and back zipper

Size 8, TTS, fully lined

size 8, TTS
$188, 100% cotton, overpriced imo

Cotton-silk perfect shirt in raj paisley

First, let me make a dislaimer. I am actually a fan of cotton/silk blend that many of you hate. I know it is kind of delicate, but those are the only shirts that I don't mind tucking in, or wearing under sweaters. They drape well and don't create bulk. And they may rip or develop holes, but I guess these are casualties of war, I mean fashion.

$88 size 8, they did not have a 6
I would say it fits TTS, it is slightly oversized in size 8, I usually wear 6 in perfect shirts, but 8 was OK . It would be great with denim!

57% cotton 43% silk, pattern is matched, again!

Luxe utility pant
Great for casual wear. They fitted me quite well, so I would think they may not work for those of you that are pear shaped, with small waist and wider hips.

I would prefer that they were longer because I think they may be borderline after they shrink. I do wash linen in regular washer and hung to dry (if I remember). I have a 33" inseam.

$85 100% cotton
Size 4

last year they eventually were on sale for $20

Silk blouse in anchor print

OK, this is a another 'Talithian' blouse, this time in anchor print, 100% silk. It has three cute little ivory buttons on each shoulder. Again, it drapes well and looks good, although it seems overpriced. I think the anchor print, similarly to apple print, is definitely better in small scale.

This print is also used in scarf and in capri pants.

size 6, fits TTS, sleeves scrunched up

100% silk $135

Linen herringhbone pants in pink

The linen pants also come in pink, see below, and pretty bright shade of pink, think Pepto Bismo.  I thought this would be cool with navy, but it did not work with anchor print, probably because it is silk.

Size 4, TTS

that's all folks!

  1. I totally need that anchor print blouse... the dress on the other hand is not so cute. It is too much nautical for me. Thank you so much for the pics/reviews!

    1. Thanks Janet! No, it is not hard for me, it is a mindset. And being single-tasker helps, I am totally focused on taking the best pictures.

  5. Thanks for your pics, I like the eyelet dress on you, it suits you really well. I'm in the minority perhaps but I just don't find any of the last rollout very exciting at all :( but good for my wallet at least.

  7. Thanks for the reviews.

I like the Maritime in this motif, but I'm so over the reissued designs. I'm not buying much from J.Crew these days (months) because of this.

    1. it get's boring doesn't it. how many versions of Talitha shirt or Maritime dress and Jules dress can they issue???
It doesn't help that none of them work for me...

  8. I do love that anchor blouse, and hope it makes it to sale. I also like the colors of the new paisley. The eyelet dress is really pretty in the purple.

  9. Interesting observation about the repeated shapes, I noticed that as well and I find it boring, except for pencil skirts of course LOL. Absolutely everyone is doing these mode shifts lately so I'm going to avoid them for that reason. Anyway the anchor dress looks very cheap to me, something from F21 maybe.

I like the paisley blouse better than the skirt, perhaps it is more true to life as it appears washed out and subtle. Too much print on top for me though. Thanks for the preview ajc!

    1. I meant to say MOD shifts. I need another cup of tea.

    2. I keep buying the Mod shifts because they seem to be the only dresses that designers are making without the waistline that hits in the middle of the ribcage. Stupid designers. One of these days, I'm going to make good on my threats to learn to sew patterns and then I'll make my own stupid dresses.

    3. IKWYM about the high waists and I really dislike that style too. I actually do have a couple of mod shifts, including J.Crew's sightseer dress from last year and I like the style but I am always turned off of very recognizable styles that become really mainstream.

    4. I am with you on Mod shifts, like them but they are EVERYWHERE.

  10. Oooh, thank you for sharing! I love anchor stuff, so the blouse is cute. I agree with you about oddly straight sweatshirt dresses: good for others, not on me. I also really like the paisley Perfect Shirt and the eyelet dress. I'm eager to see how they look on me. Thanks for the J. Crew fix!

    1. Th anchor blouse is the best in this print. It is not so obvious until you look close up. It also has a good drape which is crucial imo, esp in loose blouses.

  11. I'm definitely going to order that Eyelet dress to try on at least. That's a perfect summer work dress for me (if the proportions fit, that is).

Anchors have always been too "literal-nautical" for me personally. I do think the dress and top are cute and, like the apple print, they look great on a lot of women, but they're not my thing.

    1. This eyelet is definitely much better than the circle eyelet...
I think I would like anchors more if they were maybe yellow not navy, that's just like wearing 'Christmas sweaters' with snowmen on sleds.

  12. I loooooooooove that paisley perfect shirt and to be honest, I'm pleasantly shocked at the pattern-matching. That's going on my wishlist for sure.

The other items are just meh for me right now, but I so appreciate you sharing the pics and info!

    1. I was shocked myself, I did double take to make sure I am not imagining it. And it is also centered in front and in the back!!! Shocked she was...

  13. These seem like recycled designs and Crewcuts for mommy gone wrong. Yeesh. The anchor w/the stripes is too much, but I do like that silhouette. I know it doesn't work for many. I'm not a fan of paisley, but I like the print in the blouse. I also used to not like the cotton voile, but I appreciate it. It's great for layering under other pieces, esp sweaters. Thanks for sharing pics :)

  15. AJC - did you see the striped silk Jules dress that they show in the "looks we love section"? I really like it but was wonderng what it was like in real life?

  16. I really like that Anchor dress! I'm hoping since the consensus here isn't too favorable toward it that maybe I can get it on sale. Look at me, it's not even out yet, and I'm hoping to get it at a sale price, lol! I could totally see it w/leggings and flats or boots. And flip flops in summer. Can you tell me though, is it black or blue? If it's blue, I'm not as interested.
