Denim western shirt
Fits TTS, substantial weight and nice dark wash. Quite soft, considering that the fabric is substantial. If you are looking for this type of shirt is seems well made and the cut is good, fitted but not overly so.

Simulating tucking in |
I think that because of the thickness of the fabric tucking in may be tricky.

bust darts insure good fit in the chest |
It didn't gap on me in size 6 but it was borderline. Overall, I think it is a very nice shirt, although expensive.
Not sure if I would like to tuck in into the sequin skirt, but that's just me. I would wear it with colored skinny denim or printed capris. If I had any of those, that is :)
No. 2 pencil skirt in medallion paisley
This skirt was $69.99 in my store. It is a nice skirt, with the usual J.Crew pencil skirt fit. It just totally lacks the 'wow' factor. 100% Cotton
and unlined.
Correction: it is fully lined in 98% cotton, 2% spandex. Thanks Whitney for pointing it out!

Size 4. Fits TTS |
Painter stripe bateau tee
This us a nice basic tee, if you still don't have enough of stripes. I like it in black and I think it would look great with black bottom.
|
Size Small, borderline on me |
Size Small is rather fitted on me, I would consider Medium, if I wanted to buy it.
|
I like the elbow length sleeves

Unidentified silk popover
This is new and I don't see it online. Hugely oversized. It reads 'pajama top' to me, which is a trend now, so I guess it is intentional. It would definitely benefit from some styling. It may be cool when done right, I think. Maybe with wide legged long trousers? I would prefer it in different color, this combination seems a little harsh to me. But some may see it as crisp. What's your take?

That's all folks.
Tomorrow I will review dresses, two from new arrivals and one not yet online.

Are you interested in anything?
What do you think of the oversized silk popover?
Please share!!!
first of all i love the striped cotton skirt in your previous post! that is just my style.
ReplyDeletei love the denim shirt but i am partial to denim. and i really like the purple skirt too.
not loving the last silk top, looks kinda big but i suppose, like you said, that is the idea.:)
Janet, you wear denim so well, I always love it on you. Actually seeing you in the workshirt inspired me to look again after I almost gave up on them.
DeleteLike the Gardener's Cottage, I really like the denim shirt!! I saw this shirt the last time that I was in the retail store but I didn't try it on. Now, it's on my list! I'm not wowed by the Medallion Paisley skirt or the silk popover either. I'm hoping that this popover trend will end soon. I like some of them, but I'd prefer a full button-down shirt if that makes sense. Thanks SO much for these reviews!!
ReplyDeleteIf you can work the denim shirts this one is pretty nice I think, do try it and let us know what you think Rynetta.
DeleteIkwym about the popovers, what is the point of them, i prefer regular button downs as well.
Although I guess for tucking in they are better. Still not sold on them. I am a traditionalist.
I love the dark denim shirt, have been looking for one for a while and I did try that one on, but I wanted to be able to tuck it in and I thought it was too bulky for me. This is somewhat OT but I found a cotton/linen blend one at Talbots this past weekend that was wonderful and looked great tucked or out. I think the skirt looks fabulous on you, but as you, no wow factor for me. As for the popover I am not that great with styling them, love the pastern, also thought it looked pj ish :). Thanks for the reviews as always so helpful.
ReplyDeleteI have to check out the Talbots top. I almost decided I will never find the right denim top. In fact I have an old one from Express that fits me very well, but I still don't like it. I don't know why I keep on trying, maybe it is just not meant to be?
DeleteBeing able to tuck in is necessary because I was planning to wear it with skirts. I don't like colored pants on me and I am not ready to embrace denim on denim look (i've been there already, lol)
OMG, they are charging $150 for that popover? I really don't understand their princing strategy (overcharging and marking down three weeks later). In any case it looks like it is the same pattern than the in-store Amie maxidress. I tried the pencil skirt and I agree, it's very plain. Thanks for the pics! I tried to leave a comment to your previous post but it didn't work!
ReplyDeleteThat western shirt just begs to be paired with that $2,000 snakeskin skirt!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reviews! The Spring/Summer pencil skirts are so uninspiring this year.
haha A, when I get the snakeskin skirt I will go back to it for sure ;)
DeleteI really wanted that dark denim shirt to work on me, but it was too tight in the shoulders, and there is unfortunately no stretch in it. When I sized up to fit my shoulders, it was too big everywhere else. This one is not meant to be, for me.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the pajama-striped top. The purple printed skirt looks nice, but I agree with you that it lacks the wow factor.
hi cate, I am narrow shouldered so I can see how it would not work for you.
DeleteYes, what's up with pajama tops? Not a fan of them at all.
I love the denim shirt but I think it will be to thick for what I am wanting the madewell one did not work either.
ReplyDeleteOff topic but I have seen that you have purchased some of the Repetto flats. can you possible tell me how sizing was for you compared to other brands?
Hi simplydreaming, I posted about Repettos sizing in my 'TGIF!!!' post, you can also do a blog search in the upper right corner and it should come up.
DeleteI think for tucking in chambray works better, most denim shirts are too bulky.
I bought that purple Medallion Pencil on sale and *totally* fell in love with it, but I think that my "wow" factor hovers at the lower end of the scale when it comes to prints, haha. The crisp twill appeals to me, it should breathe really well in the summer, and I can think of so many things in my closet that I can pair that skirt with. It is gray and rainy here today, but it's supposed to be in the 80's tomorrow and I might wear it to work :)
ReplyDeleteI think I remember that stripe silk popover shirt from the little preview catalog, and I agree with your "pajama top" assessment. I like the colors, but I have absolutely no use for a slouchy top like that.
ETA: Double-checked the Medallion pencil and it is lined. Skirt is 100% cotton and the lining is 98% cotton, 2% spandex. Purchased last week online, FS.
DeleteThat is strange Whitney, I would swear it was unlined. Maybe I am loosing it...
DeleteThanks for checking and sorry everybody for the confusion.
No problem :) The cotton lining doesn't feel like a regular lining, and I don't think that one could wear the skirt with tights or hose - it would totally bunch up.
DeleteLove the skirt on you but if it's not lined, don't think it's worth the money. The silk stripe top is nice. But at $150??!! It sure does fit big. Did you try a smaller size to compare?
ReplyDeleteIt is lined as Whitney pointed out. $150 is crazy for pajama top, right? No, I didn't try smaller, I usually wear a Medium, btw.
DeleteI love the denim shirt but found the $118 ticket price to be too much for my wallet, I'll patiently wait for it to go on sale. It looks great on you and works best when it's not tucked in imo.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely sale watch, I agree. If it goes low enough I will get it as well.
