Orange rhymes with pink

I hope you all had wonderful time, enjoying the Holidays with your family and friends. Thank you so much  for all the Christmas wishes, they warmed up my heart!

I ate enormous amount of food and drank quite a lot of wine, so I am now in recovery mode. I am technically off from work, but since I support end-of-the-year activities, I am still 'on call' and watching my emails. I will also spend New Years Eve working until midnight. This is not the most fun way to greet the New Year but hey, since everything in life can be commented upon using a quote from the Godfather movie "I said to myself, this is the business we've chosen..."

My gifts this year did not include any J.Crew and I am happy with that. I am also not into after-Christmas sales, just like I don't do Black Friday. I think I am definitely coming off the crewlade and shopping for clothes in general. I have plenty in my closet and I hope that in 2013 I will be mostly recycling what I already own.

The outfit above is from couple of weeks ago, I just never got around to post it. In fact, I have several of those, so I will be using them this week. Since I am staying home, I am sitting by my Christmas tree, wearing (red) pajamas and a hoodie, having no reason or inclination to dress up.

This skirt looks like last year's Bright Flame, but it is an earlier version (2008?) and the color was called Persimmon. Persimmon is very similar to Bright Flame, Modern Red or Poppy, but the wool is thicker and the skirt has a fully fashioned waistband, which creates more flattering fit, at least on me.

I needed some cheering up in the rainy weather, so I decided to double up on brights and wear the skirt with the predominately pink Liberty print perfect shirt.

It is funny how sometimes, when you add more, you actually lessen the effect. Worn with something neutral or contrasting, the skirt color might have blinded your eyes, but when paired with something bright, it gets neutralized or maybe just more intentional, therefore less shocking orange.

My shoes and purse also have orange tones creating almost monochromatic effect again. I liked this outfit and it definitely put me in a cheerful mood.

That's all folks!

Are you 'recovering' after Holidays? Watching the after-Christams sales?

Do you do bright on bright? Do you think it works here?

Please share, It would be no fun without you!!!

  1. Hi AJC - I think this looks great - I like pink and orange together and since I already have an orange tweed JC skirt from several years ago, I think I will try and steal this look shamelessly!!

I am with you - no JC was under my tree. I am starting the purge and making piles and have decided to lighten my load in 2013 in many different fronts. I have also been thinking a lot about a post you did awhile back - about how it used to be that we would get clothes only once or twice a year, get several things and become quite content. We have become quite a disposable society it seems to me and there is always new and amazing things bought at rock-bottom prices that appeal to those of us (me!) with weaker constitutions. Thus I now have a clothing budget beginning next week and will limit myself to one to two items (or no items!) depending on the month. I have given my husband permission to help me with this! I am actually feeling very excited, as it will ensure that all purchases are now very thoughtful! And like you, will ensure that I wear what I already own!

    have a great day!

    1. Thank you WMM! We have to support each other now. You are right, it is a social issue and I noticed that the less I shop, the less cravings I experience and the opposite. I am not even looking at the website. And for the first time it is not that I put myself on a ban, I just don;t feel like it. I am reading more and thinking of new projects for myself which have nothing to do with shopping. I still like to dress everyday just don;t feel like I need new things and I am enjoying my closet more.

  4. For some reason I could not comment on your last post so I am wishing you a belated Merry Christmas today ajc!

There was no J.Crew under my tree and I've hardly bought anything there lately. Everything seems to have something negative, usually it's quality but often the styling too is just not for me. I am also being much more particular about what I purchase and realizing that I have so much already.

I love the orange skirt with pink. I usually wear this one with camel tones or blues but will now have to give pink a try. From the look of your outfit photos you have room to indulge over the holidays. It's good once in a while, especially since you have to work on NYE. :^(

    1. I agree about both quality and styling. I also got turned off by J.Crew taking itself too seriously. I never fell for 'bad boyfriends', even as a teenager they made me laugh.
I think this shirt works because it does have some orange in it and the neclace ties it together, even if it is not exactly the same color but separated by the shirt it reads the same.
You are quite perceptive (of course), I had a very stressful couple of months and I lost about 7 pounds. Don't like the stress but don;t miss the pounds, I know they will be back :(

    2. I'm sorry to hear you were so stressed. I was thinking you had stepped up your workouts as I know you're very active. Hope things have improved or will soon.

  5. It feels very liberating to end the year with only one purchase from Jcrew this Fall/Winter season. I intend to do the same next Spring/Summer. I actually ordered a couple of items but everything went back except one due to poor fit/design, quality not on par with price or mainly everything was just blah. I still like nice clothes & dressing up but I realize I work hard to have nice things & any addition to my closet must be extraordinary. Thanks to your blog, I get so many great outfit ideas that allow me to use what I already have in new, exciting ways. More power to you and your blog and I look forward to another year of your wonderful posts.
