The tale of three peacoats

I liked this peacoat when I first saw it in the Lookbook. I could not justify it, because I already own the Majesty peacoat in navy, but I almost regretted that I do (even if I love it), since I thought this would be a more stylish alternative. This coat is not available in most store but I spotted it in size 0 and 2 (only), which were probably returns. I decided to try on the 2, just to get an idea how it looks on me.

Size 2
Size 2 was too tight, as expected, I am usually a 6. But it was not very tight or too wide in the shoulders, which makes me think it runs big.

I was not impressed. The leather trim is nice but of course it would add to the price of dry cleaning. I liked the buttons better than the brass ones on Majesty. But the wool is more felted and fuzzy which I did not care for. The lining is navy and with no special details, while the Majesty this year is done in contrasting hot pink.

I did not realize until I tried it, that is is much more cropped shape than Majesty. I prefer the longer length.

Other than that, it fits nicely but I would have to see in in my regular size. I am afraid it would be much boxier then.

It looks good open, but that may also be due to being a smaller size. Overall, I don't think the coat is worth the extra money and I am back to loving my Majesty with no regrets. Yay!

Tipped peacoat
Tipped peacoat

The Tipped peacoat is a victim of pretty horrible styling on the website, at least imo.

This coat has the same shape as the Collection leather-trim peacoat.

Size 4
Size 4 fit about the same as Collection leather-trim peacoat in size 2, maybe just a smidge tighter. It was almost good, but I would like a little bit more chest room, so I would say it fits TTS. They did not have the 6 for me to try.

I don't like the high contrast of the trim. But I have to admit, I don't really like the tipping effect, both on blazers and coats. There is something very 'uniform' about it and the peacoat shape makes it worse.

See it also on my pal Ema, here.

Majesty peacoat

I already own the Majesty, so I only wanted to compare 2012 version to the one I own and I would say it is about the same. I liked the pink lining, which is new this year. Mine has a navy lining. I had an attack of the prickly shoulder pads last year, but I just got them removed by the tailor and J.Crew picked up the bill. It was surprisingly inexpensive (because my tailor is 'ouch pricey'), I think it was no more than $15, maybe even $10. The coat looks about the same after the removal and I know some JCA's did it themselves. I do hope J.Crew fixed the issue but I would not count on it, despite their claims of being 'obsessed with quality'.

2012 Majesty in size 6

As you can see, this is a longer coat and has shiny brass buttons. I think it has a tighter fit than the tipped peacoats. You can see my review of last year's version HERE.

That's all folks!

Are you a fan of J.crew peacoats? Do you own any?
Do you like/consider the tipped peacoats I reviewed?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. I love my navy J Crew pea coat, it's the workhorse of my wardrobe but it makes me feel so pulled together, ooh pink lining would be wonderful, I have last years too. The tipped pea coat looks too 1980's for my taste.

    1. I agree, my Majesty peacoat is one of my favorite purchases from jcrew. I have worn it a lot last year and I am looking forward to wearing it again this winter.

  2. Oh in the black/white option not the black.

  3. I tried on the Tipped Peacoat and it was a mess on me. The longer Majesty Peacoat is more flattering. I don't own any J. Crew Peacoats but I love the material on the Majesty.

    1. I did not like the shape of tipped peacoat at all and I don't think it is practical, i like to cover my rear when it is freezing.

  4. I like my plain J Crew stadium cloth pea coat from several years ago- great fit too. It's simple so I can mindlessly throw it on and accessorize with a hat or scarf, dress it up or down. I love the tipped style in my J Crew hacking & professor jackets but it is too busy in outerwear.

    1. I think you hit the nail on the head here, it is too busy making it more difficult to add scarfs and will clash with some bottoms.

  5. Thanks for the review of the leather trimmed option, I had been considering that, but now I am leaning towards the factory version of last year's envelope coat, because I like the shape more, though I'm not fond of the retail cocoon coat.

    1. Lisa, I was excited about this coat but no more. But I think it may work better on you, especially the shorter length.

  6. Thanks for the link love ajc! Clearly I am not a fan of JCrew peacoats but I too like the longer lenght of the Majesty over the cropped style of the tipped ones (also fabric was so stiff in the cropped ones, I couldn't bear it). I am going to get the boiled wool one from the Loft, just waiting for a 40% off promo, this morning when I run out of the door I regretted not having it on hand, I have surprisingly vey few black coats (exactly one and it is the Script coat from a few season ago, which is very elegant, not a everyday, run-ot-of-the-door coat)

    1. Ema, I really liked that loft coat on you, I think this is much better alternative, especially considering the price,

  7. Interesting that this year's peacoat has a pink lining, very nice. I do not own any J Crew peacoats, though I have one from Brora.
Years ago I had a JC camel peacoat that I loved. Somehow I managed to get a slash of blue ink right down the front and I had to throw it away! Wish I still had it.

    1. Dani, I am sure Brora coat is better quality and it will outlast any jcrew coat. Ink? That hurts ;)

  8. Thanks for these reviews, I actually like the white with black tipping but I'm a sucker for black and white.

I have a pink peacoat from HO04 and the stadium-cloth Winnie from FA09 and they have both held up beautifully. My FA10 stadium cloth peacoat is a horrible, pilly, threadbare mess with broken buttons. Only use now is for playing in the dog park. Seems like all my crappy J.Crew clothes are used for doggie time. I wonder if people who see me feel sorry for the homeless dog walker.

    1. LOL xoxo, you deserve better than wearing a pilly mess! The difference in quality now is really shocking. I think my ink-ruined peacoat was from 2004, that was a great year for coats.

    2. Oh no! Pilling sweaters is one thing but pulling costs??? This is just horrible to relegate $300 coat to 'dog park only'.
I did not have any pulling problems with my jcrew coats from last year so hopefully they fixed it.

  9. Thanks for the reviews. I tried the tipped pea coat and liked it, but I am almost always in casual clothes so the shape was ok. I think I'm the only person who likes the popover pea coat :-/ It is odd, but I'd buy it in a minute if it were in my budget-or on sale. My climate is so mild that my coats don't get enough wear to justify a new one. I'd really like to try the stadium-cloth mod coat-just for fun.

    1. That popover peacoat is gorgeous IMO, just very impractical for me.
Check my post tomorrow I have a revie of a coat that I think would be perfect formulas climate. It is not from jcrew though.

  10. I am looking forward to your tomorrow post. You have been so good about posting. I am so immersed in deadlines., I haven't had a moment. I always look at pea coats, but often find them to be a little short- and I am not tall. I have an old one from Banana republic, which is on its way out. I prefer the Stadium Duffle I have from last year, but sometimes it is too heavy. I may have to look at the Majesty coat. Although, what I really need is a light weight, rain repellant quilted coat like the Snowcap. But, not in olive or black.

    1. Majesty is definitely not short, so maybe you should try it. For the non-wool coats I would look elsewhere, I have one from Athleta (old) that I really like.

  11. Thanks for the reviews and I had high hopes for the leather trimmed pea coat . If it doesn't look good on you then it will look horrible on me. I was in Club Monaco on Saturday and tried on a tweed coat and it looked great. You might want to give it a try.

  12. I love peacoats and have several from a few years back that are wonderful. Still, I was tempted by the leather trimmed and constrast tipped versions. Thank goodness for your reviews for bringing me to my senses, if I ever had any. ;)

    1. Tiffany Rose, I was glad I spotted this cat in the B&M, it saved me from ordering it only to be disappointed. It looks longer on the model (again!) and I am sure she is taller than me and would be wearing a 0 or 2. I really wish they would have pictures with model standing straight, coat buttoned up and list the size she is wearing and her dimensions.

  13. I love peacoats, they are what makes stalking the Ralph Lauren sale pages part of my morning routine. I am still holding on to a silly "sale grab" of a white organdy peacoat with gold hardware, you know, in case I get invited to a formal confirmation party. On a yacht. I can't make myself give it away.

    1. I love them too, I had a version of a peacoat ever since I graduated to adult sizes, or come to think of it even before. This is one item I never got bored with (same with some kind of beige/camel trench coat).
White organdy on a yacht? Maybe we should have a party where everybody wears whatever they always wanted to wear. Maybe one of those sailboat cruises on the Hudson? Like people who do enactments? Enact our dream life, what do you think?

  14. Love peacoats, don't like the tipped one at all. Too short and too much going on. I so much prefer your navy with gold buttons-great choice.
