Pattern Mixing with J.Crew Stretch Denim Jacket

I am not big on pattern mixing but sometimes I like to have some fun with it. An easy way to do it, is to choose simple color palette like blue, black and white and put together simple geometric print (stripes or polka dots) with big floral.

In this outfit dashes of ochre in the skirt and green necklace keeps it from being too predictable.

This outfit consists of some favorite pieces in my wardrobe. The skirt is in one of my all time favorite J.Crew prints. I was examining the details and sadly, it may be one of the last instances where the lining is in acetate and the hem is over 2 inches wide in case you want to let it down. I remember when most J.Crew skirts and dresses were made this way, but it seems a distant memory now.

The jacket is J.Crew Stretch denim jacket. It is very similar cut as Nolita denim jacket but it has more stretch in it (90% cotton, 8% Polyamide and 2% Elastane). It has a clean medium blue wash, very classic. It fits well and it is very soft. It is nicely defined in the chest and nipped in the waist. I am wearing size Medium and I would say it runs rather small. Last time I tried Nolita jacket I was in between sizes, but this one I don;t think I could button in Small.

I didn't wear a denim jacket for quite a long time, but I love this one. I always thought that any time I would like to wear a denim jacket, I would already be in jeans and I was not totally sold on denim-on-denim look, even with fancy heels. But I realized that with its cropped shape, this jacket will be fun with colorful skirts or over dresses. Plus, it is soooo comfortable.

  1. The gallerista skirt is lovely, I fell in love with it after seeing it on FFM, but I don't own one.

    1. For some reason they did not make many of those skirts, we haven't seem many popbacks either. Maybe they did not want to make something without all those cost cutting measures?

  2. You look fabulous. I love florals and stripes! Just wish I had more florals to pair with my massive stripe collection :)

  3. Beautiful outfit! You look great. I'm not brave enough to mix patterns; already get stink eye looks at work because I don't think they "get" some of my J Crew ensembles.

    1. Thank you! This skirt really goes with more than I thought but I also like it very plain with black or navy tee.

  6. I love that Gallerista skirt too. Of all the things J Crew recycles through Factory, I wish they'd do this one. Hanging my head in shame, but I own 3 jean jackets... one is the J Crew Nolita, and I bought it too big and I need to sell it. The second one looks a lot like yours, it's a darker wash and has a lot of stretch. I found that one for $3 at a resale store, it's made by GAP. The third one is the J Crew Factory one they had out last spring/summer, in a light wash. I really like how you wore yours here! I don't care for jean jackets with same-ish denim bottoms.

    1. I do have another jean jacket., it is bedazzled with sequins and painted with white (scratch style) flowers made by Oilily. It is totally over the top even if it comes from before the bedazzling era. Funny that I used to love it because it was very unique, now that it is actually on trend I like it much less and wanted something simple.

  7. You nailed that look!!! I can see why you love the skirt. It is a great example of what J Crew did best. I also miss the days of 2" hems. Before I buy J Crew these days I check to see how many corners they have cut by looking at the hems and seams-crazy huh?

    1. I agree, all this cost cutting is very sad. They save few pennies per item but we get a totally inferior product. But that little big of extra fabric would save them all the returns and slashing prices after your average suburban women try on those obscenely short dresses. Maybe they would keep them if they could get 2 extra inches?

  8. Oh, yes please! I love pattern mixing and this was one of the most stunning skirts J Crew has made in a long, long time! The fabric is divine, the pattern so beautiful and can be worn so many ways. There are countless options both casually or formally. So beautiful with even a simple and very classic solid navy or black merino turtleneck and flats, boots or pumps. It is just fabulous and should be used as the standard when designers at J Crew are developing "real" "collection" items.

  9. AJC, you look great, and even better, happy and comfortable!

My first grade daughter has, for a few years now, worn denim jackets on a daily basis, with everything from frills to sweats, and they always look adorable on her. I've only recently started wearing mine (although I suppose it's questionable to be taking fashion cues from a first grader!) -- and I agree, the ones with stretch are infinitely more comfortable. I have three Nolita jackets (blue, black, and white denim) and don't wear them nearly as often as my Gap colored denim jackets from this summer, which are not as versatile (yellow and red) but so soft and stretchy. But you inspired me to buy this one this am -- there was only one left in a small, even at full price! A rare thing for a JC item...

    1. Wow, i did not realize it was selling that well. And you know what? Those first graders can be pretty savvy dressers and they could give certain Gayle some advice I bet :)

    1. Thanks WMM! My daughter got me when I was turning around with this last picture and she thought it was funny, but yes I do like it and I was happy wearing this skirt:)

  12. I have it but sadly i don't wear it as much as I should. It's so lovely but I should stop treating it as a special occasion skirt and just enjoy it and wear it to death. It does go well with so many things. Thanks so much for the styling tips. You do have a great eye for coming up with unexpected but adorable pairings. Another favorite is the mixed media skirt and it's sad that nothing distinctively special has come out from Jcrew in a long while. It's looking like a very different company in just one season. I haven't been to a store since August even if I live and work near a couple of B&Ms.

    1. Oh Marie, you have to wear it more! Even with just simple tshirt or sweater it looks great and can read quite casual. I wear it to work and I never felt stuffy or overdressed, I think it is also because it is very comfortable. Get it out before it is too cold!

  13. I love this, could be my favorite I've ever seen on you! Good inspiration to wear my Gallerista too.

  14. You look like you are having fun and so happy, especially in the last pic. :^)

I'm not good at pattern mixing but I don't consider stripes a neutral so I wouldn't be able to pull this off but I don't have a lot of patterned bottoms or jackets/sweaters for that matter, anyway. I almost wore two different but complementary shades of blue tweed earlier this week but in the end I swapped out the skirt for solid wool in a contrasting color instead. Yep, that's how challenged I am. Just could not do it.
