Black Watch, Aegean Plaid and Saturday Sweats

Perfect shirt in Black Watch

Do you like Black Watch plaid?

Well, it seems like J.Crew's is a loose interpretation of the Campbell tartan. I think the slim trench coat is more like it.  Or maybe there are different variations?

Size 6
In general, I am not a big fan of dark colored plaid but it sure is pretty, Black Watch or not.

Pattern is matched
It fits TTS to small, depending on your chest size. It fitted me well in my regular size 6 but it gaped in chest. I am 34D;  if you are C cup or smaller, it should be a good fit. I often have the gaping issue, especially that I also have narrow shoulders, so I cannot size up too much. But J.Crew still fits me better than most other brands.

It does gap
Size 8 fixed the gaping issue, but it did not fit as nicely everywhere else and it was just blah.

Size 8
Overall, I really liked the shirt and I thought it would be a nice, casual look. I don't have anything similar, but I also don't remember thinking "Gee, I really wish I had a plaid shirt to wear today."

It is 99% cotton, 1% spandex.

Size 6
This shirt fitted me in my regular size, no gaping here. The 6 fitted about the same like 8 in Black Watch shirt.

Pattern Matched!
I like it but I don;t need another button down (even if I wear them all the time, I already have a closet full of them).  I would consider it on deep sale, the fabric was very nice (99% cotton, 1% spandex), it is soft and comfortable and the blues are very pretty.

No gaping

I also spotted the sweatshirt. It was briefly featured on J.Crew website under weekend section.

Size Medium
I tried a bigger of my two sizes because I like my sweatshirts loose and slouchy. It is slouchy enough but the fit is boxy. To me, this sweatshirt is couple inches too short and too wide in the sleeves. It looks OK when you roll up the sleeves but I want to be able to unroll the sleeves if I want.

I wish it was longer
It feels nice and soft and I liked the stripes (I know, again). But $72.50 is about twice what I would be willing to pay for it, even if it was longer.

$72.50?? 100% Cotton

Pants size Small
Saturday pant is not new but I never tried it before.

I have to say I really liked them. They are very comfortable and they fit me well in size small. They feel like sweats but fit more like leggings. They are great for lounging and under longer tops or tunics. The are long enough on me. I am 5'6 and have 33" inseam. If you are taller, they will probably be too short, at least in Small.

What do you think?

Do you wear plaid button downs?  Do you like the ones I reviewed?

Do you own Saturday pants? How do you like the sweatshirt?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. Hi ajc! I have given all of my button downs to my daughter, she loves them. They look great on her too, she wears them under cashmere tee shirts, with her jeans or her skirts.
I like those Saturday pants and they are very flattering especially for a lounge pant.
I also like the sweatshirt on you.
Even though the model is wearing The Glasses I like the way J Crew styled the sweatshirt!

    1. Hi Dani! Isn't it great that you are both the same size? I Like that sweatshirt too, I only wish it was a little longer.

  2. Ajc, is the sweatshirt fleece-lined for warmth or just a heavier weight cotton? I've been waiting for a lounging top that is actually warm and stylish at the same time. BTW, the Saturday Pants are the best!

    1. It is just heavier weight cotton, I am afraid :(
It is probably not that warm, especially with shirt tail hem.

  3. Hi Ajc,
I don't look good in button downs, although I like the look on others. I agree, that is not a plaid I would call 'Black Watch'. The copywriter from space...The Saturday pants look great on you! I have the same distressed jeans you are wearing. They are so comfortable, but I don't wear them that often. The sweatshirt is pretty but, again I agree- $72.50?

    1. I guess they figured that it is plaid and has black in it... I actually started wearing these jeans more often for some reason.

  4. I love a plaid button-down and I have far too many, but I wear them a lot. I won't buy the black-watch you tried on only because I have a very similar J. Crew shirt from last year. I have and love the Perfect Shirt in Aegean plaid - it's one of my favorites. I like the sweatshirt but I'm with you in not paying that for it. Have and like the Saturday pants too, great to wear with my plaid flannel shirts :) What kind of jeans are those? I like them!

    1. I saw on JCA that you bought it after all, I think you are going to like it, I liked it more than I thought.
The jeans are J.Crew, destroyed matchsticks, I think from 2010.

    2. I am weak. If it's flannel, I usually like it. Except for the mustard colored one, that one wasn't good with my skin-tone, a shame because I loved it. It's a really cool and unexpected color.

  5. thanks for your reviews! I don't have a jcrew store and this helped me decide whether or not to buy something on their website.
