Split personality and shopping at Anthropologie

After writing my recent post on minimalism, I went shopping at Anthropologie. Do I sound like split personality shopper?

The fact is, I almost never shop at Anthro. They have many beautiful and unique offerings but they usually don't speak to me. I do shop for my bohemian self sometimes, but then it just never seem to be a right occasion to wear those purchases. Mostly, I end up wishing for one less ruffle, funky hem or other embellishment. As far as whimsical, I do like owls, bicycles and castle scenes, just not on my clothes.

However, I was looking for jeans last weekend and Anthro is surprisingly (to me) well stocked in that department.

I ended up buying a pair of jeans but I wanted to include them separately, because I also have a Jean Shop review for you.

Jeans reviews coming up tomorrow
I did not have the rigth top to try with the jeans so I grabbed a black tee from the hanger next to the fitting room and, to my big surprise, I LOVED it!!!

Slubby v-neck tee
It comes in an array of shades and is also listed under the name of Keansburg Tee.

Super casual

I never bought into the uneven hem trend before, but let me tell you, it does wonders for multitude of body sins. It flows away from the midsection and it is perfect with jeans and other slim fitting bottoms. The neckline is perfect as well, somewhere between scoop-neck and v-neck and just deep enough without revealing too much.  I was tempted to immediately order this tee in several other colors but I restrained myself. It is not cheap ($38) and anyway, I think this kind of shape looks best in neutrals. I would get a white one, but it was too sheer and it would require a cami. I am still thinking about the Keansburg raspberry one.

Another item that caught my attention was this lace, burgundy, a-line skirt, that I cannot find online.

Update: Thanks to fshnonmymind we located the skirt. Thank you!
Doily Lace Skirt
I don't have a burgundy skirt and the crimson maple one that I ordered from J.Crew was so unappealing to me that I returned it without taking it out from the package.

This skirt looked like perfect transitional piece and something I could wear to work but just as easily on weekends. I took size Medium, which is a bit loose around the waist (but OK with a belt). It also skims over the belly and allows me to wear it lower on my hips. The workmanship seams fine and while the lace is intrinsically susceptible to snagging, it does not seem too delicate. I love the easiness of the shape and it is supremely comfortable.

I tried it with a black t-shirt and it creates a nice casual look but being a-line, it benefits from more fitted top.

This brown t-shirt works better, however later on, I also tried other options, but only after my (9yo) photographer was asleep, so no pictures. It looked great with my denim short sleeve top from the GAP, and I liked it with striped J.Crew long sleeve tees in olive and black.

It is not what I usually wear it but I do love this skirt.

Last item I noticed in the store, was this cotton cardigan in marled black/gray:

It also comes in chartreuse. It is 100% cotton and lined in cotton, except for the sleeves. The lining fabric is black with white birds on it (I think those were birds...), you can see some of it peeking out from under the sweater.

Shirting Cardigan

It looks super cute and it feels super comfortable and cozy, I loved it.

It runs TTS to small and I needed a medium. The sleeves were full length on me but I have relatively short arms so they may be bracelet length on some. The shape of the cardigan is pretty basic, which is a plus in my book, but it has a nice drape and it floats away from your midsection. It was not cheap at $128, so I had to show some restrain, but it went on my wishlist (which Anthro actually has on their website, what a wonder!).

The receipt was emailed to me, how cool is that? Anthro is definitely more on par with the technology, despite its old-world, vintage vibe.

What do you think?

Do you shop at Anthro?
Have you tried on anything I reviewed?
What do you think of the uneven hem trend?

Oh, and if any of you Anthro shoppers knows the name of the skirt, please let me know!

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. Love all of your purchases. Anthro has a great selection of jeans and they wish list feature makes it easy to wait until a great sale comes
    along.

    1. Why can't J.Crew have a wishlist like any other retailer is beyond me.

  3. I can see why you love that skirt, it's amazing! I usually don't buy anything at Anthropologie, I don't feel like myself in most of their clothes and I have some trouble with the fit there. I agree that they have good jeans - I got my AG Tomboy Crop jeans there and I really like them. I'm looking forward to your Anthro jeans post. I like everything you posted today, and nothing from the J. Crew new arrivals post yesterday, surprising! I want to try on all of these things. Thank you as always for the great reviews!!

    1. I know exactly what you mean about not feeling like yourself, and I have problems with fit also. I also didn't even know that they sell multitude of premium denim until quite recently. But I am happy that I stopped by.

  4. They have a loyalty program, too. I love their quirky styling and unusual pieces, but The quality and fabrication can veer wildly. The pieces I wore the most this summer were from Anthro, so I do peek in there every once in a while. I like the Tice's store better than the GSP. Have you ever tried that one? The T - shirt is so pretty. Unique and not too fitted or sheer.

    1. I agree, there are some great pieces but there is a lot of man made fabrics and styling that covers up issues with quality. I just made it to Tice's Corner for the first time and I agree, I like it better!

  5. I had to laugh, sometimes I wonder if I have a split personality too, especially when I start loving items at Anthro!
That tee shirt is great, the lines of it are perfect. If it holds up in the wash I think the price is pretty good as well.
And the skirt! It's beautiful and the perfect color! You could wear it with a heavier sweater as it gets colder, it will be terrific with boots as well.

    1. I am drawn to some Anthro styles but J.Crew is still more reliable for my lifestyle, plus usually it fits me better. I think it is good to explore sometimes. I agree that think this skirt should be great for early fall with sweaters and boots. Thanks!

  6. What a difference a day makes . I love everything today but was on the fence yesterday. The jeans makes your legs a mile long. If they fit you I'm in. Do you know the name of the skirt. Looks great on you. Thanks for the reviews.

  7. Ha, I definitely have a split personality, wavering from preppy to bohemian. I love that skirt -- so pretty! Would be lovely with some brown tall boots. The tee looks comfy and flattering too, as does that little cardi. I agree that Anthro has a great jeans selection -- I snagged my favorite AGs on sale there.

  8. I love the tee, jeans and skirt. They are very nice pieces and look great on you. However, on both my monitors, the skirt comes off as rust and not burgundy at all.

I am a little torn on the color of the pencil skirt from J Crew also. It was a good buy, fits nicely and is made well, but somehow seems a little flat. I wish it was a bit more intense of a deep red. I will try it with a couple more things, but I am just not feeling it, to quote Gigi.

    1. kitsmommy, I might be color blind at least as far as color names. I think you are right, burgundy should look like burgundy wine, right? The skirt is more red than it looks online and less brown but I guess it is not burgundy, you are correct. I also think 'golden burgundy' is not burgundy either, more like henna or reddish brown Crimson maple is probably a better name but I did not like any of them, they look very muddy and heavy to me, especially in double serge wool.

  9. I love this on you! You talked me out of the crimson maple skirt!

I have several personalities and it gets me in trouble as it creates orphans! But you have made wise purchases!

    1. Some JCAs loved crimson maple, so don;t take my word for it but it is definitely not burgundy (like in wine), I felt like it sucked all the light from the room.

  10. That outfit in the first pic is totally chic. Love those new jeans on you.
I love the idea of Anthro's clothes, but most don't fit into my style. That's not to say I don't have any of their pieces in my closet. I browse often, but buy sparingly.
I'm on the fence about the uneven hem, but that tee looks so great that I might have to get one for myself.

    1. I think 'browsing often buy buying sparingly' leads to the best purchases. Also, I think buying in store we buy more according to the fit and we are much less likely to fall for marketing gimmicks. I think that's why many of the favorite pieces in my closet are from retailers other than J.Crew, those were usually bought in store and not 'under influence'.

  14. AJC, you look fantastic, like a lovely senorita from Barcelona in your black shirt and red skirt combination. I want those jeans and skirt. Thanks for your review and I look forward to your jeans post. I'm also loving Anthro's electronic receipts. Much easier to hide the evidence from husband!
