Summer Blues And My Favorite Color Story

I don't wear too much color in the summer. I went to the mall the other day and all stores had this citrus salad explosion going on, it gave me sensory overload, lol. I usually stick to white, ivory, navy, blue with some black and sometimes red, but mostly only as an accent.

For some reason, I wear much more color in the fall/winter. Around September I start to feel the call of more color saturated wardrobe, jewel tones and autumnal hues are all the rage then. But somehow, the quality of summer light makes all those rich colors seem out of place and I only long for sunwashed, whitewashed, color drained look.

I know this may be contradictory to the colorful visions of tropics and other summer destinations, but maybe I just long for the crisp and cool of the whites and neutrals. Blue of course, fits into this cool/nautical color imagery perfectly. I like all the shades of blue in solids and prints and my summer closet is full of them.

I do like to work with some kind of theme as the week progresses, it makes it easier for me to get dressed every day. Here are some pages from my blue color story.

Gallerista skirt and perfect linen shirt
This skirt may be put in more fancy category, but I have no problem wearing it quite casually.

Polka dot chambray and scout chinos
This chambray shirt is my new favorite and I can see myself wearing the heck out of it in the coming months.

Porcelain Paisley skirt and Camp Striped popover
This is for Ina, who was asking how do I wear my striped camp popover, this is my favorite version, but I love it with white shorts/capris and I think the blue maxi skirt will work as well. I think the key is to add some feminnine accent, like neclace and colorful belt. And of course it would be great with colorful pants if you do wear them (or skirts), I am thinking modern red or just red but also bright green or yellow.

Hilary dress
You have seen this but I sill like it, nothing simpler like just blue and gold.

Emerson Fry skirt with Perfect Linen shirt
I do love those linen perfect shirts, but instead of buying them in every possible color I just buy multiples of my favorites. These run really big, I am wearing 4 which I never do in shirts.

White tunic Popover with blue jeans
We cannot forget blue jeans in our blue week, my Friday uniform complete with white button front and colorful shoes and necklace, I never get tired of this look.

Striped perfect shirt and scout chinos
Another striped shirt in linen/cotton and again my favorite capri length white pants, aka scout chinos.

That's all folks!

  1. It's so nice to see how you coordinate a week's worth of outfits. It's hard to pick a favorite, since I love blue. The outfits with the bright shoes really caught my eye. I like the look very much.
Thanks for the info on the Linen Perfect Shirts. I've been wanting to buy one or two and didn't realize they were running large. Do you just size down one size?

    1. Thank you maryeb! Yes, I would say size down one size. I wear 6 in most button fronts, sometimes 8. 6 fits but it does not look as nice because it loses it's fitted shape.

  4. So fresh and classic. Love the elephant necklace on you. What size did you buy in the scout ? I wear 2-4 in cafe and was wondering if I should order the same.

    1. I've been wearing this necklace every day. I got 6 in scout chinos, I am almost always 4 in pants but I like to size up in white and they don;t feel too big. Cafe capri in 6 were too roomy in hips.

  5. Great outfits! I love white capris right now, too. My favorite article of clothing is a great white sweater, but there isn't a large window of time to wear them here in the South. I am bummed so many white tops are sheer these days...

May I ask how you like your Luccas, and how often you reach for them, I am somewhat regretting backing out on a pink pair of them today. They were super cute and comfy, but I wondered how versatile they'd be. Thanks!

    1. Wendy, I like the Lucas, but frankly, I don;t wera them that often. They don;t look that great with skirts/dresses because of thick straps and they are not leather lined. This was not my best purchase but I paid almost full price for them. If I got them for the current sale price, I think I would feel different about them. I do like them with pants and to brighten neutral outfits.

  6. Love all these looks ajc, but I think my favorite is Porcelain Paisley skirt and Camp Striped popover, its a great play on the classics. I really enjoy more classic outfit combos because they always look so effortless. I adore color and have a lot of fun playing with it, but I find myself always drawn to the same colors in the end. I tend to stick with yellows in the summer and blues in the winter. Those two are definitely my favorite colors. Glad you posted this, its great inspo for the perfect linen stripe shirt (I have it too and LOOOVE it - so comfy!)

    Have a great weekend!

Ah and a plain navy dress, I just wrote that down onto my sartorial wish list. And I got the porcelain paisley skirt - thanks to Dani, it's just stunning.

    1. Tabitha, you have to show us the Porcelain Paisley on you, I am sure it will look great. If you see the skirt on ebay I think it fits similar to the blurred rose which I think you have, I sized up to 6 to fit my waist.

    1. Tiffany, I love jeans with white shirt but they feel opressive in summer heat so my white capris replace them when it is hot.

  10. I also love all of the looks, but my favorite is the one with the jeans and white button-front.

I do not wear a lot of color, but when I do it is usually in the spring and summer, and even then it is mixed in with white, navy, khaki, and sometimes black. During the fall and winter months I wear neutral shades and darker colors or jewel-tones.

    Enjoy your weekend! :)
