Going with the Flow

 Dessert was delicious!
When I was in High School I read a short story by Julio Cortazar titled 'From the Observatory'.
It is a little odd piece, hard to categorize, somewhere between scientific article, photographic essay and lyrical poem.

The main theme of the story is the Atlantic Eel migration. The Atlantic Eels breed in warm salty waters of Sargasso sea, near the Gulf of Mexico but grow up and spend most of their life in the fresh waters of European rivers. Scientists have long been puzzled by the mysterious non-existence of baby eels. Well, they were not where they expected them, because to breed, adult eels have to travel 3700 miles across the Atlantic Ocean until they reach Sargasso Sea and die after spawning. Young eels take about 3 years to return to the fresh waters of their motherland and they will inevitably close the cycle in about 10 years.

Somehow, being 16 or 17 at that time, this story about eels journey through the sea, made me feel like I have just unwrapped a gift marked 'mystery of life explained'. I can make fun of it now, but on the other hand, it was those little moments of revelations that gradually made me a person I am today.

Yesterday, we went to Valentine's Day dinner and every woman in the restaurant was wearing red and so was I. Even some men (although not Mr Ajc), were sporting red ties or sweaters.
Winsome Dress
It did not bother me at all to be so predictable. When we left the restaurant, I spotted an older couple, both of them completely gray, crossing the street while holding hands and a carrying a bottle of wine. On the other side of the street, a little boy was skipping along their parents, holding on to the red heart balloon.

Suddenly, I thought that again we have arrived at Sargasso Sea and I felt very very lucky.

Did you go out yesterday? What did you wear?
Are there stories that have impacted/inspired you, now or in the past?
Please share!

  1. Oh how lovely seeing that old couple and the young boy, that's like a scene from a film. No just an ordinary day here, but I'm wearing that dress to the theatre this weekend. Love the eel story and its impact on you.

    1. That's exactly what I thought, that I was in the middle of some romantic comedy...

  2. I love this story and your a-ha moment, and it sounds as if you had a lovely Valentines as well.
My husband was teaching last night so we didn't go out which is fine. Soon we'll be on holiday anyway. Actually I think I wore all black yesterday, not very sporting of me!

  3. I understand that the day is important to some people so I hope that those who were expecting something traditional were not disappointed. We gave up going out for Valentine's day. It felt busy and rather contrived compared to the usual private, relaxing dinner out that we prefer. Instead we have a few romantic dates and gifts during the year. I wore pink and gray yesterday, but none of it was J.Crew.

    1. I think as long as you do those date and other little things together it does not matter which day you do it. I just take any occasion I can :)

  4. That dessert looks yummy! Your story is sweet :) We don't do Valentine's day... for now, anyway. We need to buy so many new things in the coming months (stove, fridge, kitchen floor, mattress) that we don't want to spend money on unnecessary gifts, etc. I do love the day though, and all the yummy candy that goes with it.
