Red skirt for the Holidays (three ways)

Have you been looking forever for the perfect red skirt?  Well, I wasn't really looking but many times when J.Crew came up with different iterations of red pencil skirts there were never red. Modern red as we know is more of an orange and so was persimmon and poppy. So I didn't even think of No2 double serge wool pencil skirts in deep poppy when I saw it online. But then I spotted it in store and it was Red. Medium red, not too deep with blue undertones but also not orange.

Now, in all those pictures below the skirt looks orange, at least on my monitor. I guess it does have orange undertones but irl it reads red. The same thing applies to my Rooftop red Valentinas, they also seem orange in the pictures but they are definitely red. You will have to trust me on that :)

Of course, a red skirt would be perfect for the Holidays. An obvious pairing would be with black and white or black and cream. I think it would be stunning with polka dot sequin top but I don't own it. If you are brave and not afraid of 'sexy' it woudl look great with leopard.

This is what I came up with:

With polka dot Blythe blouse, red shoes and gray tights. I liked how the gray and cream soften the impact of red, but the black snakeskin clutch adds some punch.

***

With sequins for some Holiday sparkle:

I kind of wish I have bought that polka dot sequin top, after all. It would have been bold and perfect. But the gray sweatshirt also works, I think.

***
Christmas Tree Style:

And to go all out Christmas colors I paired it with green. Usually I would shy away from looking like a Christmas tree but I strangely I don;t mind. I think with the leopard clutch and brown boots I can pull it off. I would probably wear different tights (brown?) but I did not want to change.

Actually, I think this is my favorite look, super cozy but festive.

My turtleneck is from Brora and boots are Boden. Rest is from J.Crew.

That's all folks!

Do you own a red skirt?
How would you style it?

Which of the three combinations is your favorite (if you like any)?

Please share, It would be no fun without you!!!

    1. Hi Tasia! Maybe both? Ian thinking the skirt us more versatile and for some reason I think nothing of wearing a red skirt but red pants scare me.

    1. You are right Dani, this outfit was super cozy. The tneck is so soft, I usually cannot stand wool turtlenecks but this one I could sleep in.

  3. That's beautiful, I like it with the silver grey. I actually love that modern red shade - think I'm the only one!

    1. I love my Modern Red chino shorts, actually, especially with denim. I think it's a pretty red but maybe hard to wear near the face for some complexions.

    2. I have tops, sweaters, shorts, skirts, and shoes in Modern Red/Poppy/Flame/Whatever. I'm a pasty brunette and it's one of my favorite colors to wear.

    3. I like modern red, I have a skirt, a jacket and a pair of shorts and I wear them often. Next to my face ilike to add another color. I had a Kate Spade solid dress that was beautiful but it turned out too much for me so i sold it to the jca.

  4. ajc, I am loving the grey tights with red shoes and am going to add that to my holiday weekend outfit mix this Saturday. How's that for copycatting? Glad JC is broadening its range of reds so more shoppers can find a shade that works. (They often do "cherry" reds in men's but not women's hmmm.) Enjoy your versatile, chic and festive skirt.

    1. Copying is a form of flattery so steal away :)
I liked the maraschino cherry shade last year, I risk they would do a simple knee length shift in that color.

  6. I got this skirt too in dark poppy! i think the color is a beautiful "true" red. Just curious, did you go with your normal size? i ordered my normal 0 no.2pencil skirt size and it was quite big around the hip area. I exchanged for 00 but still not has fitting as the 00 i got in golden spicy one. Perhaps I am losing weight? lol..
anyhow, I liked the way you styled it and you look great. I especially love the one you paired with your sequin sweater. I plan on wearing mine with the wynter sweater (black and cream).

    1. I went with my normal size. I think it sometimes depends on particular skirt. I found it actually tighter fitting than my Festival Blue from this year. I wish they would be more consistent with sizing and I know it especially affects those who are on the ends of the spectrum :(

  7. I like the more tonal footwear/tights combo with this skirt, and I loooove that green sweater outfit. I love the sequin sweatshirt with it too, although I think I'd prefer darker shoes with that. Thanks so much for these great styling posts! I miss the dressing room reviews, but these are better for me! Much better that I work on styling what I have than shop for something new. I hope you wear that red & green outfit somewhere, I really love it.

    1. Hi cate, I think not doing fitting room reviews also helps me concentrate more on what is already in my closet, glad you are enjoying the styling posts. One benefit for me is I am now trying to get my hair in at least somewhat decent shape.
I think you might be right about darker shoes, I was just too lazy to try but I thought about it.

  8. I like it with the blouse. Quick question for you -- I've really liked some of the Brora pieces you've posted, especially the long-sleeved teal thermal you were wearing the other day. Do you buy from the Brora website or is there somewhere stateside that you tend to buy from instead? I am seriously considering a purchase.

Have never commented her before, but I love your blog for its reviews and photos -- I came back here repeatedly yesterday while assembling a huge j crew holiday purchase and found your reviews on items so helpful in making my final selections -- thanks!

    1. Hi Michelle,
I love Brora and yes, I buy it from their website. I also bought some of the pieces on ebay in th epast, but you have to usually get the UK sellers.
If you think of ordering from the website I would wait for January when they have their big sale, it will definitely save you some money, though even on sale, their stuff is still pricey. I love the thermals (I think I have 8 of them) and I always get compliments when I wear them.
For a comparison I am usually size 6 in J.Crew (4 in bottoms) and I order size 12 from Brora sweaters and tops and 10 in skirts.

  11. Gorgeous, ajc! I love these looks. I'm wearing my Modern Red No.2 skirt (from 2009) today with the Sequin Stripe Tee that I got in the mail yesterday, and I agree with you that the Sequin Polka Dot tee would look great with it as well!

  12. I like the last look the best, I think the brown suede gives it such interesting texture and combined with the Christmas tree colors exudes a seasonal warmth.

  13. I like all three, but the 2nd & 3rd are my favorites. The sequins create a cooler look and the pine sweater a warmer look. Thumbs up from me ;)
