Camp Popover In Stripe And Other Fitting Room Reviews

I was in J.Crew last weekend to return couple of things from my recent online order and I decided to try on a few items.

Camp popover in stripe

I love button downs and menswear inspired shirts.  In particular I have a weakness for the blue stripes, so naturally I needed to try on the camp popover in blue stripe.

Unfortunately, they did not have a 6 or even an 8, so I picked up the blue one in a 4 and a 6 in pink, to check if this would be my size, in case I decided to order it online.

size 4 and too small
Size 4 was too small (too short and pulling across the chest). I would say this fits TTS.  It was very comfortable and I loved the feel of the fabric. I prefer the fit of J.Crew button downs to their popovers, but it was still fine.  The pink color is not me but it is very pretty and size 6 was a good fit.

Size 6
Slightly see through

It is slightly see-through, I believe the effect is exaggerated in pictures. I would still like to order the blue one in 6, but I will wait until it goes on sale or until we have a FP promo.

I know, I said multiple times that I will skip the colored jeans/pants trend, but I was tempted by the color of these Bennett chinos, since it would look so good with all the blue striped shirts and my elephant necklace.

Love the poppy color
I took size 6 in them, which is bigger of my two pants sizes, so I would say they run small-ish. I did not like the fit, very blah, and they were bunching up in the hip and rear and did not do me any favors. I was almost relieved by that, this way I can stick to no-colorful-pants-for-me rule. I did like this color combination, but I just could not imagine myself actually wearing them.

This is much more my style. Again, they did not have a 4, so I tried a 6 and they were slightly too big but other than that I liked the fit. I would even consider getting them in bigger size, one reason is the sheerness factor and the other is that they felt much more comfortable in the calves, while my black pair, although it fits me well in hips, always rides up in the calves area and feels restricting.
capris size 6, TTS
simple and classic

Jersey
maxiskirt

I have a similar maxi skirt that I bought last year from Anthro and I was curious to try this one:

Size Small, TTS
The skirt is very soft and comfortable and fits TTS, but it tends to show every lump and bump. It is long and I could only wear it at the high waist without stepping on it. If you are shorter you would have to hem it but it may be good news if you are 5'8" or taller.

It is long (I am 5'6)
And yes, I bought the Tillary purse, I love it!  With 30% off the price was great. I reviewed it previously HERE.

 Lace placket tee

I have reviewed this top HERE in cerise but I wanted to try it in navy. I could not remember which size I tried, so I went with Medium but it was too big and cut too low. I would definitely stick with your smaller size and I would buy a Small for myself

Too low cut in Medium

I like it in navy, but it is overpriced

Overall, The only thing that went on my wish list is the blue striped popover.  I though everything else was either more of the same (white capris), blah (chinos and maxi skirt) or overpriced (placket tee). Most of the items were both.

I think I am pretty much done with my summer shopping.

That's all folks!

What is on your wish list?
Are you done with your summer shopping or are you just starting to stalk the sales?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  3. I bought the red Tillary bag too on that 30% a while back. I love it too, it is a true red!
Colorful pants are so not me as you know. I do like the color of those chinos and you are right, perfect with the elephant necklace! Now if they did a skirt in that color...
    Thanks for the reviews!

  4. I have to say that I like the striped popover but I am not a big fan of the popover, I prefer button downs. They easier on my hair to get on and off. I have long curly hair and I usually snag it in on the buttons. I think that the top looked great on you and did go well with the colored chinos but I am with Dani, a skirt in that color would be great!! I am jealous I did not pick up the Tilary purse in red, I had it in my hands on Sunday and said I didn't need it, but have been thinking about it alot. I think it really works for many occasions. Enjoy yours and thanks for all of your reviews...so helpful :)!!!

  6. I have the Bennett chinos in a different color and they are not good on me. They are too tight in the calves and not flattering overall unless I am at my lowest weight. I'm considering cutting them off to make rolled chino shorts. I have been tempted by a bright color in chinos, but the brightly colored pants/jeans trend doesn't feel like me so am reserving the brights for shoes/tops/accessories. You look good in the Bennet chinos, but if they don't feel good on you, I understand why! There is something about them, on.

I love the popover and the lace placket tee and especially the Tillary purse.

    1. I agree, they don;t look so bad in the pictures but they looked worse irl. They were tight at the waist but bunching up everywhere else and very blah in the rear.

  7. I like seeing all the things you try :) Seems like the store you go to gets lots of stock like my local one. Funny thing is I don't think I've started shopping for summer yet (is that weird?!) I am still waiting for this one cashmere sweater I love (the two tone one - it is SO soft) to go on sale - I joked with my mgr friend they'll have to just pretend it is new fall rollout soon... I like the popover you tried. It reminds me of a pink seersucker shirt I have from about 2007 that I still wear a lot. I think you should get it for sure. I also think those red pants look really good on you, but then maybe you didn't like them in real life - I think in general a nicely fitted red pant is really a nice style statement (do I sound like Tim Gunn?). I don't buy any pants from JC because they never fit (but I tried the popart dot capris last week just because I really liked them in the catalog and they looked like clown pants).

Oh and after saying I never try or buy jeans in Anthro I tried these ones the other day in pink http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/clothes-denim/25221680.jsp
They actually fit perfectly (which is a major reason to get them)and I kind of love them because they are really comfortable and I love the style but a) they are way expensive and b) not sure since I am not a jeans girl they'd be worth it (but I highly recommend people try them on. Plus even though I love pink not sure if this color would be limiting..? (Although the SA thought it was great for my skintone and hair). The pale blue is also gorgeous IRL and I bet more popular. Oh but then I found out they (J brand houlihan) are some kind of celebrity cult style (hehe).

Ok well sorry for off topic!!

    1. Hi Sydneygirl, you are start to just start shopping for summer, this way you are getting best deals. Sometimes by the time season come, I am already bored with the items, that is really bad. I also don't really like the fit of may J.Crew pants. I like the scout chino much better than Bennett.
I cannot see the link you posted, I noticed it happens with many links recently, they just go to the main website, I akmm not sure why. I am warming up to the colorful pants but I am still not there yet.

  8. Love your website! You frequently mention 30% off here and there that is not specified on the website. Can you tell me how to join J Crew's special members discount? Thanks!

    1. Hi Anna, thanks! The deals I mention I usually just get from J.Crew Afficionada blog, plus sometimes I get personal shopper 20% off. Some of the discount are not advertised on the website but if you check the JCA and there is a deal somebody will be sure to report it it is a greatest resource! I also use Shop-at-home website for additional 7% cashback. If you are student or educator you can get additional 15% off in store but this seems to vary by the store.

    2. Thanks! I also found that they will honor the student discount through the phone once you have placed an order through the store's phone (they need someone to verify the status).
