Oh Baby Blue (musings on personal style)

Do you think you have a distinct personal style reflecting your personality and uniqueness? Most of us like fashion but there is an essential tension between fashion and style. Fashion and trends make us part of the collective current, it is our way of saying to the world, I am modern and I know what is going on, while style is a way to connect to ones own self. You can be stylish without being fashionable, although this is often being labeled as eccentric, quirky or peculiar. You can also (easily) be fashionable without being stylish.

You don;t have to be a celebrity or have a big budget to have a distinctive style. I think that to some people style comes naturally. The first fashion blag that I started reading few years ago was by our wonderful DaniBP. Dani's style is very distinctive, everything she wears, she turns ladylike, even if it is just a pair of jeans. She also adds a little bit of old fashioned femininity to every outfit. Or, take a look at Tabitha, of Bourbon and Pearls. Although she does not like to share too much with us (which is also part of her style), I know she always manages to add Hollywood style glamour to any old outfit, that's what I call having a style.

There are many others of course, in blogoshere and irl, I cannot even start to list all my inspirations. As much as I admire other's style, I could never not make it my own. I know because I tried. Don't ask me about all those Brora dresses I bought because I was smitten with Dani's style. In the same way, I was sometimes dissuaded from buying something I loved because some of my favorite bloggers dismissed it. Also, I sometimes catch myself wanting to change something somebody else is wearing. Why wouldn't she add a accessory? Cut her hair? Wear something different than a pencil skirt?  This also happens irl. Did you ever try to go shopping with somebody that dresses very differently than you but asked your for advice? I have to say, I often I have trouble letting them 'stay in the character' and I have to curb my tendency to dress them as I would dress myself.

That's why I think all the 'Style Guides' are useless. You can help somebody pick the trends that work with their body. Finding a style is a solitary activity than needs some silence to listen to oneself.

Personally, I have always struggled trying to develop personal style that is 'just so', not too trendy, not too quirky, not too old fashioned, not too young, not too sweet, not too masculine, the list goes on... Well, I am afraid this can easily lead into a trap of 'no style whatsoever'.

Just perfectly bland. However, I actually felt great wearing it. Oh well, I guess this just might have been a reflection of my personality. That's a little scary thought...

But maybe it is the opposite, black and white canvas lets the personality be the focus? Maybe it is more about how the clothes move with you, how they make you look comfortable in your own skin? Maybe the accessories stand out and do the talking?  Emphasis is on the person, or specifically, the face?

Still, I think if my bag or shoes were bolder, I would feel like I wore it better.
"Oh, baby blue, Oh baby blue
C'mere I'm gonna smear another colour over you
Get outta bed you little sleepy head
Your black and white needs a little bit of red"
(Serena Ryder, lyrics to Little Bit Of Red, listen HERE)

Another example of black/white/gray, that I am gravitating to recently. This is probably a bit more trendy, with the swingy top (Anthro, review HERE), necklace and boots. I loved wearing it. Again, very simple but it was all about ease and comfort.

Next outfit following the same principle. Btw, I have to say those midrise toothpick cords in salt (review HERE) become my favorite pants this winter, I probably wear them once a week.

The merino v-neck is from Ann Taylor. I got it when they were running 50% off sweaters (after Gigi blogged about here) and it is a perfect shape to wear over skinny pants. I got size M and it has a nice slouch without being too big. It says it is hand washable. I machine wash (on delicate) all of my sweaters anyway, but I feel even better about it when it actually says you can wash it on the label.

I believe an outfit can be just as simple and comfortable when wearing a dress.  The dress above is J.Crew from few seasons ago, I think it was called Olive. It is one of my favorite LBDs that never failed me. I wore it formally, with black shiny belt and pumps and it is my designated 'funeral dress'. But I love to wear it in a more casual way, with boots and wide, floppy belt.  It is very comfortable but put together at the same time, my favorite type of clothing.

OK, not sure if you want to see this, but this is how I look when I am lounging on weekends or working from home. Still wearing black or gray, just in super comfortable version. However, I usually do my hair, put on makeup and add my favorite necklace. This justifies the fuzzy slippers in my mind :)

So, to summarize, my conclusion for today (as this is always changing) is that that my style is not really about what I wear. I like neutrals and I like colors. I wear skinny pants and wide legs. Full skirts, pencil skirts and dresses. Some sharp and modern and some old fashioned and feminine. But whatever I wear I try to make it look easy and comfortable. And when it looks too comfortable I tend to add something more polished.

Not sure if it is making any sense to you, because this is about what I am trying to achieve. Life is a journey ;)

  1. I think a clean simple style suits your aesthetic, and you always look nice in simple lines. Your hair looks great in the picture with the slippers- new cut?

    1. You are funny with the pink cardis, they must look great with your coloring but ikwym, you are more of a blue girl I think. Me too, when I choose color, it is usually blue or red.

  3. What a great post! I think you have hit the nail on the head and much more eloquently than I did last Sunday! I want style whatever that is for me personally, and last year I felt like a fashion victim. We do have to dress like ourselves, don't we?

    1. WMM, I definitely owe you a credit for an inspiration. I was thinking about it ever since I read your post. Funny, maybe feeling like a fashion victim is sort or rite of passage on the way to 'style'/

    2. I think it could be one of the "steps" - I am really and truly over that phase. It is quite freeing! I am still working on refining my own wardrobe, but now it is being done in a VERY thoughtful way!

  4. Makes brilliant sense! You look fantastic. I like clean simple lines, too, and have particularly noticed, post40yrsold, that I prefer clothes that are trim fitted and not loose. I don't know if it's middle age or if I'm just finally acknowledging what looks good on me and makes me feel confident. Full skirts and full legs and blousy tops make me fidget with my clothes. I've kept one dress with a full skirt just in case I feel like wearing one for "old time's sake." And now I've noticed I finally wear most of what's in my closet!

    1. You are right on the money LTee, when you have what's your style in your closet, you wear it all! And ikwym about trim and fitted, I think when we get older we have greater need to feel modern and flowy and flowery is more of a risk of looking frumpy than on younger women.

  5. I prefer to be stylish, not fashionable. When I wear a fashion trend, I feel conspicuous. I feel conspicuous whenever I wear something that is not my style, which is how I'm finding out what my style is. If I don't feel right in it, it's not my style.

    1. Cate - you are right on - when I reach for something and don't want to wear it, i know i have made a mistake...

    2. cate, that's a great test. Similarly to what LTee said, when it is your style you want to wear, and when it is not, it usually never sees outside of the closet...

  6. Hi ajc, thank you for a really interesting post. I am struggling with the same question. I tried wearing more trendy things last year when I was following popular blogs like Atlantic-Pacific and 9to5Chic, but I gave up as I just felt uncomfortable, like I was wearing someone else's clothes (which in a way, I was). I am in the process of selling off most of that stuff. You're totally right, life is a journey, and personal style is a reflection of that journey. Thanks for the photos of your daily outfits - you always look great!

    1. Louise, I am so glad you chimed in because I was thinking of you when I was writing about giving style advice. I remembered your post when you needed to style somebody as a class assignment, I thought it was very interesting and you did very well imo.

ITA about feeling like you playing dress up when your clothes don;t reflect who you are, I have been there and I think I am coming full circle on this.

  7. Hi AJC, I think that your personal style comes through just inherently in what you choose to wear. You are always very classic and clean, and as distinctive as Dani and Tabitha.

I don't think I have ever specifically thought about these questions for myself. Clothes has always just been great fun to me. What does sort of concern me is not the 40 year milestone, or the 50 year milestone, but the OLD milestone! I am very interested to see what choices we will make when we unmistakably look like grandparents! How fun it would be (for readers, at least!) to see your blog hit its 20th or 30th anniversary -- can you imagine? We could look back and see how we have changed!

  11. No one would mistake me for fashionable, but I do have a cretain simple style tht feels like me. I like good fabric and cut more than little doodles on clothes. And , of course, grey, black, white, navy, beige.

My hanging around the house pants for winter are Athleta black Polartec straight legs which obviate the need for long undies; until tomorrow, any way, when we are in the path of 2 feet of snow.

  12. ajc as a Canuck who has worked with her thanks for the Serena Ryder snippet made me smile as have not though of that song in a while. I really like the crisp white shirt and the Hepburn trousers on you. I would simply switch out the shoes (a heeled/ textured oxford), belt or bag (a red dr.-ish style) For me, instead of jumping on the trend bandwagon, I am learning to borrow new pieces and ideas, if not necessarily the same styles from favourite bloggers. That would be Dani's love for the simplicity of getting dressed in dresses, Tabitha remembering the statement earrings and your wide range of colour pairings, WMM's add fun shoes, Ema's add a jacket - you get my drift. The Olive dress is a fave here too. The things like that that have lasted in my closet and get worn most years/ multiple seasons are what I consider my style

    1. Oh GetFresh, you have a story for everything. Do tell what did you work on with Serena? I love her.
You are smart to borrow from everybody and not to get caught up with the style of others.

  13. I think that you always look great, ajc! I think a lot of the more popular fashion bloggers can sometimes fall into the trap of "trying WAY too hard to look cool", and there's nothing that makes a person look less cool than trying to hard. The white/black/gray outfit is very neat and chic, and you can go anywhere in it and look perfectly appropriate. I agree with your assessment that a simple outfit lets the personality of the wearer take center stage. In the words of Coco Chanel: "Dress shabbily, they notice the dress. Dress impeccably, they notice the woman."

    1. ETA: and I don't consider any of the people you mention in your post above to be try-hards. I'm obviously thinking of the bigger names who subscribe to the "trend salad" method of getting dressed in the morning.
