Sequin Festival And Wearing The Nevers

I am usually drawn to similar styles and silhouettes, clean lines, natural fabrics and minimal ornamentation. But there is not a trend or style that I would completely eschew. I wouldn't say 'I will never wear x' because for one, I don't take fashion too seriously, and two, I love to have fun with reinventing myself. Plus, I am just fickle and easily bored in general. And sometimes I find that nothing is easier than wearing "The Nevers".

With all the sequins and bedazzling going on in the last few years, I was not terribly drawn to sparkly clothes. Two years ago I bought this sequined sweatshirt and I have worn it twice, both times with jeans. I thought it was excellent idea when I bought it, but somehow it was always either sweatshirt or sequins but never both at the same time. But for some reason, last Sunday was the day when I suddenly felt like wearing it. And I did.

It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the mid 60s. I wore it to church with No2 pencil skirt in Festival blue and a pair of Glenbrae boots from few years ago, both from J.Crew. I thought I would need a scarf at first but it was too warm, so I took it off. I liked the look and I felt polished and casual at the same time. I liked the Festival blue with it, but I think almost any color pencil skirt would work.

Quick note about the boots: they are 'extended calf' version. This is what was available at the sale time in my size and I thought how bad can it be? Well, I would not recommend it, unless you really need it. My calves are average and definitely not skinny, but the opening is too wide and the regular calf would definitely look better. It is not so visible with pants tucked in, but I just wanted to mention it, in case you ever consider 'extended calf', especially on Final Sale.

In the afternoon I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and go for a walk with my daughter. I exchanged the skirt for a pair of matchstick cords and replaced the boots with a pair of Shearling McAlisters.

I really liked the combination of blush and gray. We took a long walk and even at the playground I never felt inappropriate in all those sequins. Not sure what everybody else was thinking...

The sweatshirt is a little less blinding and more subdued irl, because the camera magnifies the effect of reflecting light. Still, I was one human disco ball and I did not mind at all.

Everything is difficult until it becomes simple...

  2. The blush and grey are beautiful together. For the last two years I have wanted skintight leather trousers again, they are everywhere this year, but although I lived in them all through my twenties, I think i'll draw the line at wearing them at 50.

  4. Cute looks! I own one navy blue tank with sequins (from J. Crew Factory), I think that's all the sequins in my closet. And I never wear it. I can't quite figure out how to style it, ideas anyone?

    1. Try it all monochrome with dark jeans and navy/black blazer and maybe sparkly earings, It think it would look great

  5. Love the combo with the cords! I also have a sequined sweater and adore it - but I find I usually end up leaving it to the colder months of the year, even though it isn't that warm. Oh sequins <3

    1. Ikwym, I tend to save some items for specific time of the year and sometimes I am not sure why...

  6. The sparkly sweatshirt looks great on you!! I have it too, but it's stacked with the other JC sweatshirts (which I love -- definitely one step above the normal sweatshirts, don't you think?) and like you, if I want a sweatshirt, the sequins don't seem to fit. Maybe I need to hang it and I'll be more likely to wear it...

    1. Thanks audreys, I think the key is not to think about it too much. Yes, hang it, you will probably reach for it sooner. Mine was in the drawer and I think that's also why I never wore it.

  7. This top is one of my all time favorites! Actually, it is the only sequin top I own. Maybe it is the sweatshirt aspect, or the fuzzy terry inside, but it just works! Looks fab on you, and the glenbrae boots are J.Crew's best ever.

    1. That is my only sequin top and I agree, something about the terry, it is just so comfy. I think this is the problem with sequins sometimes, they are uncomfortable and fussy, but not this one.

  8. I like the gray with blush but not the sequins for day. That is a definite "never" in my book, at least on such a large scale. A few scattered, matte sequins on a sweater is an item I can wear during the holidays and I have one fully-sequined party skirt but there the line is drawn and I shall never cross it. If I wore this sequin sweatshirt during the day in my circle of family and friends I would be sent for drug testing. Harsh yes, but that is how I feel. I really don't believe that anyone can or should wear anything but if you love it then go for it.

    1. I knew you would say no to sequins, and ikwym. No it is not harsh, just your opinion. I am terrified of drugs and never did ANYTHING, but it seems like I have overcame my fear of sequins, lol.

    2. Yes, I'm so predictable, aren't I? I knew you would understand that it's just my opinion and I'm definitely in the minority. I may steal the gray and blush combo when we get into pastel territory. I really like it.

  9. I love the outfit with the cords, you have such long legs... But I can't help thinking that you must have been boiling in shearling shoes this past Sunday.
Never say never: I would have said that legwarmers were a furm No but they actually look cute at H&M. What happens frequently to me is that I put stuff aside that I hacen't worn in a while (to donate or sell) and then all of a sudden I feel like wearing those again and they become my favorite.

    2. The shearling was actually OK, I guess it just insulates you from whatever temperature.
I am waiting for your Theory reviews, I love their blazers.

  11. I like sequins though I have sold off a few pieces in the last year. My one piece that remains is a navy sequin cardigan, I wore it quite a bit in the spring under my navy striped Kate Spade coat. I think it is J Crew 2007 or 2008, I bought it from a JCA. It also looks great with the Galleria skirt.
I like both outfits with your sequin sweatshirt!

    1. Oh, the navy sequins must look great with that skirt! I realized that I do own another sequined piece, it is a fully sequined black shift dress from Talbots, it was a big hit at my last Haliday party.

  12. Sequin for the day, absolutely! Though I had a weird personal rule about not wearing sequins or glitter in the summer, they seem more like late fall/winter things to me. I wish I had gotten that jaspe sweatshirt!

    1. Jaspe, that was the name! I probably do the same, sequins mostly from October to December.

  14. No need to say, you know how I feel about sequins, daytime or not. I wore the same sweatshirt to work once, yes I did. When the sun hit me in the hallways, I said the same thing, I am a human disco ball.

    I think you look wonderful!!

  16. I love the grey & peach. I'm all about sequins in the daytime as well. Sometimes you just need that sparkly lift. I totally get it. I'll bet there are other women who wonder if it can be done and you just gave them the green light ;)

  17. I love your styling; I have that same sweatshirt and never wear it--for the same reason. Thanks for the inspiration. I also was JUST wondering if I could wear the zigzag sequin tee (in natural) to my office. Still not sure about that one.

    1. Leah, thanks. I guess it depends on your office and how brave you are. Maybe when you know you have some kind of celebration or around the Holidays, I think I could wear it in December, definitely better than a 'Christmas sweater'.
