Fitting Room Reviews - Feb 2012

My J.Crew store is a 'concept store' and gets the new arrivals couple weeks ahead of other stores.
I got excited when I saw that they have already received the green flower print peplum top from Spring 2012 Lookbook because I knew quite a few JCAs were interested in it. I also spotted new tipped schoolboy blazer and I thought I would take few pictures of Edie Attache bag.

For the purpose of judging how the items run I am 5'6, 135 pounds (on a good day), 34D, 30" waist, 37" hips. I almost always wear size 4 in J.Crew pencil skirts and city fit pants, 27 in denim, 6 in high waisted items, size 6-8 in dresses and tops, and I am between Small and Medium in non numerical items. Oh, and my arms are relatively short, many times the long sleeves are too long on me.

What do you think?

Here is my take:

I think the flower top would be cute if you are young, tall, willowy and, if in any circumstances, you are never ever mistaken for your (wealthy) aunt Mildred, currently happily retired in some sunny location. If you aswered yes to all the above, you can add a tulip shaped puffy skirt (in what color?) and rock the  Dior Spring 2012 silhouette.

Unfortunately, I am past the  ironic stage and curtain style flower prints may be taken all too seriously on me. This top is not for me, but I can see it looking fabulous on many of you. The peplum puffs away from a body, I was trying to get side shot but it was above my self photographing skills. I think it fits TTS, not much difference between 6 & 8, see the pictures. I'd prefer 8 because of the lower waist.

Edie Attache Bag is very nice, beautiful color and right size, and being able to carry it cross body is a plus. But the lack of secure closure on top is a deal breaker for me. If I put my laptop/ipad there I would worry that it might get wet. What if I leaned over to pick up something, would  my lipstick and keys fly out through the opening? It is a very structure bag, which also means it sticks away from the body, I don't like that look.

The schoolboy blazer is very nice. It has the usual schoolboy fit, not the greatest on me but that is expected, I am not a fan of schoolboy cut. Since it is linen it wrinkles but that gives it more relaxed fit, not a bag thing.
It is soft and it would be easy to wear with any color top underneath. It will go well with jeans and dresses.
I like the piping, since I never got a tipped double serge blazer I am not so bored with the look. On the other hand, the price is steep for this kind of blazer, I think you can find something similar for less.

That's all folks.
No, I still I did not buy anything and nothing went on my wishlist.

How about you?

Perfect Fit Color-Block

Initially, I was not a big fan of color-blocking but the trend is growing on me. I still cannot do two brights together and I prefer analogous combination to complementary ones.  For example, I like it the way Louise did it here with the spearmint top and citron skirt, but some of the J.Crew crazy combos are not for me.

Of course, I am most comfortable with neutrals and mine will be the simplest color-blocking you can do, but I have to say it is one of my favorite outfits, maybe because it is so simple.

This outfit looks like a dress from afar but it is a t-shirt and a skirt. It would also look good if you combine the same t-shirt with black pants, don't you think?

I am a big fan of J.Crew perfect fit t-shirts, they are simple, comfy, a little thicker so not see through and they fit me well.  My top is perfect-fit colorblock tee that is currently sold out but still pops back if you are interested.

My skirt is double serge wool J.Crew skirt from 2007 in black, one of my all time favorites but you can get this year's version  here on sale. The necklace is also J.Crew, I think it was store only and my shoes are Stuart Weitzman, because I had them available in my upstairs shoe closet, but the black Valentinas, or any black pumps, will work the same.

T-shirt size Small, skirt size 4

I love this necklace!

The importance of looking good in the pictures

I always thought of myself as of only-recently-fashion-evolved. I had this idea of my ugly duckling past firmly embedded in my self-image, even as I was always hoping to become this stylish confident woman when I (finally) grow up.

"Why did I waste my youth wearing ugly track suits, ill fitting jeans and cheap sale dresses?" I complained once to my long time friend.
"I don't know what are you talking about, you never wore track suits" my friend sounded genuinely puzzled.
"I didn't!?"
"No, you had those cute blazers, awesome combat boots (!) and what ever happened to that hat you were always wearing?"

I started to think about it. Maybe she was right. I remember that cool black leather trimmed blazer I had (from the Limited). Oh, and the Calvin Klein dress I really liked, and yes, the newsboy hat. I tried to ignore the combat boots part. I remembered that the coworker once said I was "the best dressed person in the whole department" leaving me shocked and embarrassed.

Hmmm, maybe I did not look so bad, but why do I remember it differently? Part of it was that I grew up in the shadow of my fashionista mother (see here). I was poor and could never afford things I liked. I was very focused on my career and I didn't want to admit I was even interested in fashion. I thought I was a tomboy.

But then it hit me. It is because of the pictures!

My family liked to spend our vacations camping, hiking, swimming and sightseeing.  And, of course, taking tons of pictures while doing it. Since I always prided myself on being able to pack in a small single suitcase, I ended up taking only practical, durable clothes, shoes that were meant for walking etc.

Wrong! Those clothes ended up looking really ugly in the pictures. My mother was onto something, after all. With her multiple stuffed suitcases, amidst my exasperated father huffing and puffing (but secretly feeling proud of her), she is always beaming in our vacation photos.

Elegant women, like DaniBP,  are wise when they plan their color story inspired vacation wardrobe. Dani always has the best packed suitcase when she goes on vacation, and I have learned a lot from her. Actually, I tried to pack Dani style on our recent vacations and I was much happier with the outcome. Finally, I came of (fashionable) age!

I never liked to spend too much on my special occasion outfits. You only wear it once, I thought, it is a waste of money. So there I am, attending weddings and First Communions, wearing dresses that were 'good enough', but never what I really look good in.

Wrong! While the cost-per-wear is still atrocious, the memories-per-wear are pennies. For my daughter's First Communion last year I bought the dress that was more expensive than my wedding dress (which was very cheap). I felt pretty and confident. I never wore it again (but I will have the pictures forever). I have no regrets.

Then, there are all those goofy pictures, taken by surprise by my talented photographer husband. "Mom, you have to see it, you look soooo awful" my daughters are always in hysterics when going through the evidence.

Why didn't anybody take pictures of me at work, I wonder?  That would show them. Remember my wise coworker? Well, nobody usually does, unless, of course, you do it yourself. So there is another purpose of this blog! 3o years from now, I will be able to pass those pictures to posterity without shame. Ha! I have outsmarted the system!

See children, even in the bathroom, grandma was a-stylin

As for the goofy business I found a solution too. I am buying my lounge wear and work out/hiking/skiing gear with the same amount of thought as my occasion dresses and work clothes. They can be comfy but at the same time still 'give me the feeling', ykwim?

After all, you don't need more than one 'painting the basement' outfit, right?

Go ahead, take a goofy picture now

Hope you are having a great weekend.

How do you see your style evolving over the years?  Do you see yourself as fashionable as you want to be? Do you like looking at your old pictures? Please share.

J. Crew Next Rollout Pictures!!!

I went to the mall last night and of course I had to stop at J.Crew to try some of the new arrivals.
My J.Crew store is a 'concept store' and gets the new arrivals couple weeks ahead of other stores. I was told it is so they can test the customer response and make store inventory decisions.

I was wearing Dove t-shirt - Size Small

I have checked on the new  arrivals last weekend and I have posted pictures with my impressions on Flckr.
If you haven't seen it yet, you can check it out here.

Today, I am posting some of the items I did not get to try previously. Hang on because there is a lot of pictures, so my descriptions will be short and sweet. If you have specific fit questions please let me know and I will try to answer them.

For the purpose of judging how the items run I am 5'6, 135 pounds (on a good day), 34D, 30" waist, 37" hips. I almost always were size 4 in J.Crew pencil skirts and city fit pants, 27 in denim, 6 in high waisted items, size 6-8 in dresses and tops, and I am between Small and Medium in non numerical items.

I tried this t-shirt in green previously (posted on Flickr), this one looks like azalea pink. Quite fluorescent in real life.
Size Medium

I would prefer Small

$45 ?!

I have mentioned this Paisley dress on Flickr when I tried the Talia blouse in the same print and I knew the cut will not work for me but I tried it for this blog. I think the cut is the same as Dolores dress.

Too short

Too high waisted

This is size 6. It looks even worse IRL
$148 30% silk 70% cotton lining 100% acetate, back zipper

I also wanted to try the new schoolboy blazer. I don't like schoolboy cut but the color is gorgeous.

The dress looks better once you don't see the cap sleeves imo

Rumpled, boxy and slightly shiny

This is size 8, they did not have 6

Now, some new arrival sweaters that are already online:
I know some JCAs (pathos?) asked about this Cashmere waffle colorblock sweater:

Size S Runs TTS

Soft and comfy but more fuzzy than other cashmere, pill alert

SA wanted me to try this scarf with it.

The scarf above is pretty but I definitely have more scarfs than I need already.

Below we have cotton waffle pullover in navy . Meh. It is not too roomy, I wouldn't size down.

Basic but comfy, size M

$79.50 and 100% Cotton

Texture

Next, new Ripplestitch cotton cardigan in casablanca blue. Runs big and it is thick and heavy. Those cardigans always tempt me with an idea of wearing them on a cool summer night. One problem. There is no cool summer nights in NJ. It is hot and sticky. If you live in a climate where in gets colder in the evening during summer this would be great.

Color goes well with dove t-shirt

$95 and 100% cotton

Better when buttoned up. Actually these are giant snaps, not buttons

I tricked you a little bit with the first picture because this dress was only display, so I couldn't try it on and I have no more details. I think it is jersey but I am not sure. I know many of you like polka dots this season.
I think this is my favorite, but maybe it is because I did not try it on. Am I getting grumpy or what?

It is navy it has polka dots and decent length!!!

Oh, and I checked Eddie Attache bag.

The lack of zipper or secure closure is a deal breaker for me. I would worry that my stuff would get wet if it rains. Too bad as it is beautiful and nice size. I liked the Tillary much better. They had a canvas with blue and red leather version in store for $228. It is bigger than Attache. You can see it beautifully photographed by Fshnonmymind here.

That's all folks. I did not buy anything. Nothing added to my wishlist either. I am surprising myself.
I have rewards card to spend and there is nothing I want. That has never happened before.
I would usually spend the rewards the day they were mailed.

What are your favorites? Have you spent your rewards card if you get one? What is on your wishlist? Please share.

Playing Dress Up Thursday

I have only two dresses in my working closet.  When I was picking my clothes for Project 333, I knew I would want one black and one print dress. I love dresses, but I've only picked two because, to me, dresses are somewhat limiting. After all, the dress is usually on outfit in itself and is hard to repeat more than two, three times in a month.

Is two enough?

My print dress is the Terra Paisley dress from (surprise!) J.Crew.  It is one of my all time favorites. I like the fact that I can dress it up or down and I have also worn it many times when I wasn't sure of the dress code. I like the knee length and the fact that it is sleeveless, because it makes it all year round dress for me.

This paisley print has so many colors it works with many cardigans or jackets and also with different shoes.
At the same time it is pretty subtle it is not as memorable. I love bold prints on others but sometimes they make me feel self conscious.

The fabric is 85% silk, 15% wool and lining is 100% acetate. It has a nice drape, feels smooth to the touch and does not wrinkle easily. It has the dreaded side zipper but somehow I have no problem with belts.

It is a truly versatile dress and here are some ways I have styled it dress in the past:

Going out to anniversary dinner

Summer wedding

Casual in the fall

Pretending it is a skirt

Playing up the neutrals
To the office
To church

Do you have Terra Paisley dress? What is the favorite way to style it? What is your most versatile dress? If you could only pick two dresses to wear what would you choose? Please share.

Oh, and no bathroom today, I am working from home.
