J.Crew Oversize Merino Pocket V-Neck

Oversize merino pocket sweater

I have bought the Oversize Merino Pocket sweater last year and I have been very happy with it. You can see my review here. When I saw the latest version in light camel color I thought this will be exactly what I need: longer, warmer sweater to wear over skinny jeans in a color I love and that will go with everything.

I ordered it in size Small since I expected it will be oversized. That was a good call, because even in Small the sweater is huge.

I am NOT loving it. It is just hanging there, sort of shapelessly and it looks bulky.

The color is nice. I am not sure if it will pill, hopefully not. It is substantial and warm. I would like it be a little longer.

I like that it is oversized but it does not hung nicely imo and pockets add volume to the hips in unflattering way. I compared it to the last year version and it is at least an inch wider on each side. That's about 5 inches in diameter! The rest of the measurements seem the same.

I don't think this is the one for me.

What do you think?

Should I try XSmall or just give up on it?

  1. Hi AJC. I think this is not doing you any favours. It looks far too big on your frame...
Perhaps it's worth giving the xs a try?
How annoying that it's not perfect.

  2. Hiya! I would echo Ruth - the xs might be the one for you! I think you are right though - cut is everything - when I was buying jeans last week, I tried on a green vneck over-sized sweater/sweatshirt and it looked fabulous. I let it be, because it isn't my colour story and I am trying to stick to that, but I may yet go back to it!

    1. I may try an XS but I am afraid the cut is just wrong for me. Oh, the green would be fabulous on you!

  3. I took a size Small in this, so you should be in a smaller size for sure! It is unstructured, though, so maybe you won't like it in any size. Even in a Small, on me it hangs there just the same. I still love it, the pockets are great. I know it doesn't look terrific on me, but in this case I don't care. Some things don't have to be the most flattering. This is one of those for me. I think you should try the XS if you are still drawn to the sweater.

    1. You are right cate, I think that it any size it will just hang there so to speak. I am total Goldilocks and pretty anal about just the right fit, I am afraid :)

  4. I think you can find more flattering options. You could try the XS but it will probably be shorter which may exacerbate the pocket issue. You have written about your Vince jacket, they also make oversized sweaters each season. Have you looked at them? The price point is higher than JC, but NM, SFA and Nordstrom have frequent sales.

    1. Hi Muffy, yes I am afraid the XS would be too short on me. I have to look at Vince, I don;t mind paying more if it is exactly what I want anad love. I will always look for sale though :)

  5. There are a lot of tunic-style sweaters coming out this fall. I am sure you could find a better style. This one has too much fabric around your tiny waist.

  6. NOt the most flattering, and I am not sure the X small would hep, although I do love the merino. I think the proportions- length, size of V-neck, etc. are a little off.
