J.Crew Reviews: Shoe Sketch Skirt And Allie Sandals

There hasn't been much that was tempting me at J.Crew lately but I decided to try the Collection silk crepe de chine skirt in shoe sketch and Allie sandals in metallic silver.

I thought the skirt may be nice for warm weather and I like the print, it is whimsical without being over the top, looks almost abstract from a distance and, after all, it is shoes!

The skirt is mostly sold out as of now and only available in limited sizes, but I am sure it pops back. I ordered it in 6, which is bigger of my skirt sizes, because this is what I usually do for full skirts sitting at 'above the waist', according to a copy.

The skirt is fine on me in size 6, sitting slightly below the navel. Size 4 could have been even better, but it wasn't available. So I would say it fits tts, according to J.Crew sizing.

I like the length of this skirt, finally a full skirt that does not 'falls above the knee', which we know means middle of the tight at usually just too short if you are over 5'2.

The fabric is nice and it has an airy feel.  Lining is poly, but it is not the slippery kind, I don;t mind it, especially in full skirt.  The print is fun.

The base color is off white, bordering on ivory/cream. I don't think it looks good with white, if you were going for all white look. It is better with ivory shades.

Of course it looks good with black but it is easy to pair it with all other solids.

My difficulty is that I don't like tucking in, especially with full skirt. It is a little tricky to find tops that look good untucked. They cannot be too long or too clingy but should be somehow fitted to offset the full skirt.  Also, because the fabric is airy and floaty, you don;t want anything too thick. The model looks fine with chambray skirt, but I am afraid it would be difficult to find the shirt with such a close fit, so the look would be different irl.

If you don't mind tucking in, you will definitely have much more options.

Overall, I would say it is a very nice skirt and with the 30% off sale price, pretty good value, comparing to other full, truly knee length, all silk skirts in fun print. I have yet decided if I will keep it, what do you think?

I have mentioned previously that I was interested in silver sandals. I even went to the mall last weekend and looked around but I haven't found anything good.  I decided to order Alie sandals to give them a try and maybe get them when the price gets better.

I ordered my regular size 8.5 and they fit TTS. This is the size I would need.

They are nice, but they seem a little stiff, I am pretty sure they would give me blisters, but then most shoes do. Other than that they are comfortable. They may be pretty wide if you have narrow feet, I don't so they are fine.

I was not very impressed with the look on my feet. I thought they may be better with pants but they were still only OK.  These were not 'the shoes that make any outfit better'.

Don't get me wrong. They are very nice sandals. But I like to do the 'department store' test in my head And I think that if I have found them in the department store (or discount store) for $49.99 I might have gotten them, as fun shoes for the summer.  But right now, even with 30% discount they are over $100.  To me they are not worth it.

That's all folks!

What do you think of the skirt and the shoes?

Please share, it would be no fun without you!!!

  1. I'm not a huge fan of the skirt in general. I think because the print is so light. I know..."sketch" skirt. The shoes are cuter on than just sitting on the rack. But I kwym about not being anything to write home about. Love the metallic, though.

    1. I think the skirt does not photograph well, but yeah, it looks kind of blah. I want a pair of metallic sandals but these did not wow me.

  2. I have ordered the same sandals, so will wait to send back the jacket I got and didn't like in case i have the same meh feeling about these. I like the skirt on you quite a lot.

I am more and more convinced though that I can only rely on JC for the very basics. Other than that, I am only batting .10!

    1. I am curious what you'd think of the sandals. Nothing wrong with them just did not make me want to wear them right away.

  3. I must be honest, neither the skirt nor the shoes are to my liking. I don't find the skirt flattering on your wonderful figure and there is nothing remarkable about the sketch print IMO and I love shoes too! The sandals are just meh. You can find prettier silver sandals, I am sure of it.

I've been striking out at J.Crew lately. Not really stepping up to the plate even. I'll visit Copley Place this week and definitely stop into J.Crew but there is nothing on my radar. They just don't do it for me this season.

    1. I actually feel the same. I bought very few things this year. I went to the store and I did not find anything I wanted to try. J.Crew totally ceased to excite me this season.

  4. Funny, I posted about the same shoes today (didn't see your post until now) and I have a different opinion. I like them a lot, they are the silver gladiator that I always, wanted (in partiular there was a Stuart Waitzman pair a couple of years, ago that got away and always regretted) so I am maybe biased. I think that like all sandals, they look better with cropped pants than with regular lenght pants. I wore them today for a very long walk and they were hyper comfortable. I guess it depends on the shape of one's feet but I found them very comfortable despite the stiffiness (I agree, but that's typical of metallic shoes).

I agree with previous posters on the skirt, you can do better IMO.

    1. I think you are right about cropped pants. I am not saying the shoes were not comfortable, other than being a bit stiff but this was not a problem for me. I just was not excited about them, maybe because they reminded me of sandals I used to wear as a child? I think I will return the skirt as well.

  5. I like the sandals a lot, the skirt not as much. With the skirt, maybe you just haven't found the right top for it yet? None of the tops seem quite right with it.

    1. I think that I just don't wear full skirts very well. I keep trying but except for the Gallerista skirt and I never really happy about them.

  6. Agree with you about the sandals. I find that a thin strap across that area of the foot (at base of toes rarely looks good, even on the prettiest feet (which mine, most definitely are NOT!).

I think the skirt is cute, if you got it for a good price. I do NOT like it with the chambray top on the JC model though -- it looks great on you with your black tee. But ivory silk could be hard to care for, no?

    1. Like I replied to Ema, the shoes reminded me of childhood sandals and if I buy anything now it has to excite me and if I don't want to wear something right away I know I will rarely wear it at all.
Skirt looks better irl and I think it is quite nice and versatile but I am worrying about the care too. I wonder it you could hand wash it? I machine wash my silk tops but I am not sure about the poly lining.

    2. Actually, ajc, I have found poly really easy to wash, one of the few benefits of poly. Maybe machine wash and line dry is an option! (The "maybe" is what worries me -- because what if it doesn't work out? Maybe we should ask Dani, our laundry expert...)
