Review of Swoop Top in Punk Floral

Add caption

What do you think of the latest arrivals at J.Crew?  I have to say, there wasn't much that got my attention, despite the 30% off and free shipping promo.  Well, I did cave in and I ordered couple of items I wanted for a long tome. I will reviews those in my next post, but other than that, there wasn't anything I drooled over.  I wasn't surprised, because earlier this week I received a copy of the 'Style Guide' and I was very uninspired.

I did like the swoop dress in punk floral but I thought it would be too short on me. I copletely missed the top in the same print until I read about it on JCA.  I still did not think it was special enough until I saw the back view picture.
It so happened that I was that I was planning to go to my daughter's spring concert and was debating what to wear. This seemed a perfect top, providing it fits right.  So I called the store and asked them to put it on hold for me.

At first, when I picked it up, I was afraid that it was going to be too sheer, but it turned out not to be the case. The silk has a nice weight for the summer and it is not the slippery type or prone to a bad case of static cling.

Initially, I tried on a size 6, which is my regular size in J.Crew tops.  It seemed quite blousy, so I decided to size down to a 4, which almost never works for me because 4 usually ends up pulling at the chest, but this top had enough room and I thought it looked much better in smaller size, less top heavy and billowy.

Like I said, the back was what got me sold on this top and I was not disappointed with the fit. The opening is not too low, so you can wear a regular bra, a definite plus. The tag has to be removed because it was sewn in on the side on the opening and sticking out but it was barely attached with two easy to cut threads. I am assuming this was done on purpose and it made the tag removal very easy.

The colors on the website seem accurate (yay!) and I think it is a very flattering, warm green.  I happened to be wearing white bottoms and I think the top looks good with them, but I like it with black and dark denim as well.
Overall, I think think this is one of better pieces J.Crew came out with recently. The only drawback might be that this top may be quite short for some. I does not bother me and I actually prefer it, especially if I wanted to wear it with the skirts but if you are taller (or with longer torso, mine is on the short side) or if you like to tuck in your tops it may be an issue.

Also, see it on Ema, here.

That's all folks!

What do you think of this top, do tell!

Anything else you bought/ordered recently?

  1. love, love, love this top. A lot of JC's tops seem to be shorter in the torso than before so I'm hoping this one works for me. You look amazing in green!

  3. I love this top on you! I looked at this seriously, but my two nougat london tops are the only semi-dressy tops required this year, so I bought cheap joe fresh tees instead!

  4. I really like this top and it looks great on you. I see they have it in some solid colors, too, and wonder if that might have more staying power in my closet. But I love this print and I like it in the cashmere sweater too. And the scarf. I don't normally wear a lot of green, but there is something happy and fresh about this print that makes me want something in it.

  5. Thanks for the review. I love the cut out in the back. What a nice surprise and very practical. I don't think that I could get away with the length or pattern but it looks fantastic on you and ever so spring like. The shade of green is just gorgeous!

  13. I love the print so you're making me reconsider this top. I was holding out for the skirt, but I think I may need a sale AND addtl % off for that piece.

  15. Thank you all for the compliments! I went to the concert wearing this top and I felt very happy with my outfit. I am going to take it with me on my upcoming vacation. Another advantage of this top is that it takes almost no space in the suitcase :)

  16. Thanks for the review! I was debating whether or not to buy this top. I thought the back opening would be too low, but it looks like it'll be just right. I am also a size 4-6 with a short torso, so I hope it'll look just as great on me as it does on you. : )
