A-Line Mod Top |
The package arrived after couple of days and once I took it out of its beautiful box, I knew it was exactly what I wanted. The quality seems superb, as much as I can tell. It is made of heavy and substantial cotton, almost like suiting items. This gives it shape and structure, which is essential for this type of top. The way the armholes are cut is perfect, on me the fabric does not stay away from the body but it is not tight. I don't know much about garment construction but I think it is because it is cut under slight angle, forming a slight v. I love the geometric lines, it is such a sharp, modern shape.
Obviously, you cannot wear a regular bra with it, but a simple strapless bra will do. In fact, the structure of the top will let you easily wear it without the bra, as long as you don't need a lot of support.
I think this top is best without a necklace, but I tried it with simple strand of pearls and I though it was OK, if I wanted to brighten it up. However, chunky bracelet would be very nice with it.
My only pair of black skinny jeans is at the tailor's, being shortened to ankle length, so I tried it with white and I think it works well. Really, any color skinnies would do, including blue denim for a more casual look. I do think I would most likely wear it with black, the way they have it styled in the website pictures.
It looks good from the back, and the length is perfect. I like how it is fitted under arms and only flares away from the waist down. I have followed website advice and ordered smaller of my sizes. This is a size Small. I would say it corresponds to numerical size 4-6 in J.Crew. You need it to fit in the upper part of your chest, then the rest should work.
I love the pockets, you can probably store your key, license and lipstick there if you'd want.
Details of the construction. You can leave the front open or close it with one or two sets of hook and eye. If you leave it open it reveals very little, it does not really come apart much.
If you are a sucker for nice packaging they will get you here. The top came in beautiful box, wrapped in tissue sealed with gold logo, your bill comes in elegant envelope and the package includes wooden hanger and lavender sachet. The top is expensive but when it arrives it does give you that feeling of getting luxury.
The only problem is that now I want the white version as well, but let's not be greedy here...

Do you only buy the styles you truly like or do you often settle for things off target?
Is there something you always wanted but somehow never bought?

Hi ajc, the top is beautiful and it totally conveys the message you want, which is modern, elegant, urban, and sensual. There are a few pieces from Emerson Fry that I want to order but the only thing holding me back is the customs/duty charges I would have to pay (about 30% of the value). I am hoping they will issue a coupon code sometime in the near future to take a bit of the sting out of the purchase.
ReplyDeleteTo your question: in the past I have settled for things that are okay but not quite what I wanted (usually it was because it was on sale) but these days I am being much more ruthless and buying only what I think is absolutely right.
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
Hi AJC - first - you look beautiful and that is a lovely, lovely top! So unique. You know that I have been having the same feelings as I transition in life. Today, I am wearing an outfit that I really love - my navy eyelet pants and my new navy merino sweater that I had JC search for and after weeks of not hearing from them on it, it suddenly showed up here late yesterday! That and a pair of ballet flats and I feel sharp. I can tell always tell now when the clothes are wearing me - I shift uncomfortable and don't feel like myself. That is helping me sort out my style for sure! I think you are wise to invest more in what you love and leave the rest alone. It is so funny - I have been staring at the j crew circle tortoise shell bracelet, but then thought "I hardly EVER wear the bracelets I own. Let it go." I love it that you are embracing this new style and freeing yourself from the old habits!
ReplyDeleteI have been looking at emerson fry more over j crew recently . I love everything ! The top is beautiful on you and now I may need one too ;) I have recently received the black zip dress, black suede slangbacks , and the black track shoes and am impressed with the quality and packaging. The style emerson has is the one I seem to be moving towards and away from trendy j crew.
ReplyDeleteA hanger? Wow,nice touch,I think that top is utterly stunning, Julie bought it too. I wish they didn't have such monstrous taxes for theUK, I dnt even look at their site now because of that.
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous on you. Black and white are my favourite combos for summer. Last year I bought two Mod dresses and one long one from Emerson Fry. I took them to Mexico at Christmas and loved the simplicity . The top is great on you and I think it's worth the price. On top of that it's made in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteI have this top and LOVE it. I've worn it with black ankle pants like the model does in the EF photo and long earrings. I usually add a chunky bracelet and heels and I feel like a million bucks! I hope you enjoy your top as much I like mine. BTW-I want the GEO print or white too, but really, I can't imagine why I'd need both. I really like EF's line and agree that she conveys modern, elegant and sexy in a great way. I can't wait to see what she does next.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing on you. To my eye, it looks like it was made for you. I'm hoping EF extends the top into a dress soon. Or maybe she did - sometimes with EF you blink and you've missed it.
ReplyDeleteI have a few JC things home for a visit. Oddly, I blogged about wishing for navy linen pants and a day or two later there they were on the website! But mostly I'm following the tailored, not Wild West, things at Raloh Lauren Blue Label. They're having a great sale at the moment, 40% off plus another 15% off, which works out to 49% off total, so it's worth a look. I've got my eye on a few of the leather pieces, may even buy one. Also Jonesing for a Missoni twinset, they go around the world looking chic and work in almost any context.
Congratulations on creating the look that you envisioned for yourself. The top is just gorgeous and as wellfedfred said, it looks like it was made for you. Evolving, editing and refining ones look is always a good thing IMO. I've been following the Emerson Frye sales for awhile but have not bought anything since I need tall sizes. I'm glad to hear that you had such a positive experience. Love the packaging and made in U.S.A too.
ReplyDeleteWhoops... I just realized that I spelled Fry wrong. I think that I've had shoes on my mind this morning!
DeleteWe are definitely on the same wavelength as I have been looking at EF and her shoes in particular. I love this top (especially the geo print) and thought about ordering it but I was afraid that I would be sized out. It is also a bit too A line for me now that I see it on you. lt looks beautiful on you and I agree about spending on a good going out top instead of three pencil skirts ;-).
ReplyDeleteoh i love that top. the minute i saw it i gasped. i love the mod print one just like it. i posted that outfit on my fb page and all my friends loved it too.
ReplyDeleteyou look fab in it...grown up sophisticated i'd say. i love the clean cut laid back style of emerson. it's a look that is v popular here in california.
You have the figure, and the shoulders to make this top look very elegant. It really suits you and I expect you will get more than your money's worth over the long haul because it's so refined and not at all trendy. I love the packaging Emerson Fry uses, it does make it special. I bought a number of EF pieces in 2012 but haven't found anything for me in the current lineup.
ReplyDeleteI try to resist the "good enough" pieces and go for what I really want. I shop at the beginning of the season and pay full price most of the time but I am willing to bet that I spend less overall than some of the sale shoppers that chase great deals, whether or not the things are truly wonderful for them.
I had a perfect Roger Vivier Prismick bag in my hand last year and didn't buy it. I've regretted that decision and now I'm looking for the one. I know the right colors will come around again but dang, why did I leave it?
this looks spectacular on you - it really fits you beautifully and achieves what you wanted. your post resonated with me as i try to focus more on items i want because it is of good quality, cut and fit. i have to really wean myself off of getting something simply because it is on sale. best to make the right investment from the outset.
ReplyDeletelike tabitha wrote, i have a feeling taxes and duties to canada would be exorbitant, so i will live vicariously through you with EF pieces! xo
Beautiful top!!
ReplyDeleteI want my legs to look like yours in white toothpicks!!! In a non-weird non-stalker sort of way you look fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteAJC- that is a wonderful buy for you. It is very striking, and is proportioned perfectly . I think you could wear it to work with a cardigan, and I think the white would be a good investment.
ReplyDeleteAgree so much, so clean and modern (fabulous with the white jeasn) AND it looks comfortable which means you will reach for it more often. i have one rule - I never buy online as I would never return the things that aren't quite right - that really is my only discipline. I'm a bit all over the show with my shopping but so much better than I used to be...
ReplyDeleteYou'll get lots of wear out of this one. I love the way the back looks. It's great on you, aj :)
ReplyDeleteI have this in the geo print and wear it with J Crew's tuxedo pixie pants and black wingtips. I love this top - and it looks fabulous on you!
